Dear Friends/Editors/Producers/Scientists

Today we received an email from Will Elliott of Watford, Hertfordshire (UK). Will has been doing some of his own research (photographic) on the now famous photos from our Warner Amazon Expedition last year. He, and others like him, are the reason we chose to publish our data extensively on our web site (bigsnakes.net).

Will Elliott has found what looks like an eye on photo 317. Given that we already knew we had a photo of Yacumama (Black boa/Minhocão) it does not surprise us but it might change the opinions of a few sceptics still out there.

The eye, its shape, size and position on the head beneath the postocular ridge are all in proportion and in keeping with the contemporaneous data we have compiled e.g. 'Eyes as big as saucers' or 'search lights' (think Amazon boat).

We estimate the size of the eye to be between 8 & 10 inches in diameter on a head that is c. 6 feet wide above water.

Let’s be clear; we don't know Will and have never communicated before today.

In November last year we reported on, and supplied photographs of, a giant snake event in near the jungle city of Iquitos Peru. The photographs we commissioned showed a trail at least 5 meters wide and now we have located video evidence to support our photos and eye-witness accounts.The video is in Spanish but we have had our contact in the Amazon supply a full translation. This is clearly further evidence that the Black Boa, Yacumama, Sachamama and the Minhocao are one and the same animal. All contemporaneous description and photographic evidence points to this conclusion.Please follow the link below which will direct your readers to this new information.

As your readers will know, we have been in discussions with selected TV Production companies and Broadcasters with the aim of supporting our return to the Amazon this year for a ground expedition is search of conclusive evidence including DNA to prove that this snake is a species previously unknown to science.

Although we still remain hopeful we received a setback last week when National Geographic International (who took an interest in our project) became concerned about the risks involved in the return expedition. Please see the correspondence below. We will continue to keep you posted on our progress:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this but we reviewed the materials from Firecracker Films regarding Yacumama. It is an exciting and intriguing story for sure. While we did like the father/son dynamic, NGCI...feel that there is a bit of risk associated with a program of this nature. Also, upon further evaluation of our current and future programming, we don't have a strong need for a one-off of this nature at this time. Our primary need is for series.

That being said, we'd be happy to take a look once again when the project is completed.

MIKE AND GREG WARNER: Major Minhocao/Yacumama Event November 2009

Here is the report we promised of the giant snake event at Juan Pablo, last month. The full report and photos can be found on our site where we have just finished publishing this important event.

AH Juan Pablo Event November 2009, Iquitos, Peru

This news was received from our friend and co-researcher in the Amazon on the Friday 13th November! We sent him in the next day to get first hand photos and eye-witness accounts of the event from the locals in the settlement of AH Juan Pablo on the edge of the jungle city of Iquitos (where our expedition base was in March 2009). This event took place only 1.3KM from the Moronococha event which we reported in June 2009 where a giant black boa dragged a floating island across a lake to destroy a house (on stilts). This gives the evidence provenance.

We have already published our connection between the Sachamama (mother of the earth), Yacumama (mother of the water) and the Minochao stating that we believe these all to be the same animal, a giant black snake, known for its burrowing behaviour and propensity to leave large channels and trenches in its habitat.

It turned out that the photographers from El Popular newspaper went in the day of the event (which was 5 days before the publishing date) and we were able to obtain their photos and add to them to those we commissioned privately 3 days later on Monday 16th November.
We believe that this is the first time that a Minhocao 'trench' has been photographed and released to the world.

GIANT BOA FRIGHTENS VILLAGERS

"Dwellers are afraid at AH Juan Pablo de la Luz in the district of San Juan Buastista, because they are sure that a giant boa is round the area.

When heavy rains were falling, the neighbours said they heard sounds similar to those of a tractor, but no one dared to leave their house to see what it was.

In the morning there was a track 20 meters long and 5 wide, enough proof for the people of the presence of a boa who now fear for their lives."

"The Giant Anaconda & Other Inland Sea Serpents" chapter 13 of Bernard Heuvelmans "On the Track of Unknown Animals" Bernard Heuvelmans makes many references to similar events that were witnessed at AH Juan Pablo. Some of these include:

My Dad & I wanted to share this report we just received from our contact in the Peruvian Amazon.

This report fits with the burrowing behaviour, 'trenches' and 'channels' we associate with the Black Boa / Minhocao / Yacumama / Sachamama of the Amazon, which we believe are all the same animal: a giant snake.

You can find similar reports of these 'trenches' created by the Minhocao in BH's On the Track of Unknown Animals page 360 (in our edition).

The last report we can find of such an event is in the early 1960s.

Greg Warner has written to me again:

I have never made a secret of the fact that I am unimpressed with the Warners' findings, and don't think that they add anything to the canon of cryptozoological research. However, unlike other people that we might mention, the CFZ have always attempted to behave in a gentlemanly (ad ladylike) manner, and so we do them the courtesy of giving them a platform from which to speak.

However, the claim that their Amazon expedition is "The Search for Yacumama & Mokele-mbembe" is somewhat confusing as is the fact that they are posting pictures of the sirrush of the Ishtar Gate. I think that Mike and Greg are in danger of losing sight of their original objectives in a wallage of misplaced over-enthusiasm.

It has been several weeks since we last heard from Mike and Greg Warner who, earlier in the year, undertook an expedition to Peru in search of giant snakes. We received an e-mail from them yesterday evening, which we reproduce in its entirety without editing:


Hi John

We are beginning to release the data from site 2 of our expedition which few, if any, people know about at this stage. Again,we are offerring CFZ first option.

In locating and recording site 2 we believe we have discovered the thermal lake that Franz Herman Schmidt & Rudolf Phleng discovered in there encounter with the South American Dragon related to Mokele-mbembe, Quetzalcoatl or the Sirrush which is recorded in Bernard's "On the Track".

THE PERUVIAN GIANT SNAKE EXPEDITION DATA - THURSDAY

"Coordinates for these images are at 72 37' 45"w, 3 23' 48"s. The video we will release will confirm our theories about a large reptile making major and minor channels and the existence of the enormous snake shape at the Napo/Amazon confluence. We believe we can prove that this shape has moved locations in recent years. Greg & Mike Warner."

THE PERUVIAN GIANT SNAKE EXPEDITION DATA - WEDNESDAY

"This is an artist's impression of the Minhocao which matches the descriptions found in our research. I would like you to examine this picture and then compare it with our expedition shot (Image 317) of the creature in the channel. Consider a head and body partially submerged.

It is our theory that the Minhocao (which was considered to be a giant earthworm) is the same creature as the Sachamama. We believe that this animal exists at the Napo/Amazon confluence and is capable of burrowing under the ground.

Tomorrow we will release satellite and video evidence that shows two (almost identical) shapes in two different locations at the Napo/Amazon confluence, which we believe are caused by this creature. Mike & Greg Warner, 16th June 2009."

DALE DRINNON WRITES:This Sachamama stuff is more than a decade old in Peru and Karl Shuker had an article in FATE about it while that magazine was still in its old, large-size format. Shuker wrote about the Sachamama in 1999-2000 (The FATE article being "Close Encounters of the Cryptozoological Kind" in 2000, following a few in the Fortean Times) and he was connecting it to the Minhocao then but what was being described was a giant snake similar to the current reports. The stories began hitting the news suddenly in the 1990s and were an odd mixture of Sucuriju Gigante and Minhocao features but identified as another different and local cryptid, the "Snail Demon" or "Snake-with- a-shell," Sachamama. It is evidently depicted on Chimu artwork. Karl Shuker did identify it with the Minhocao and he did think it was a gigantic caecilian. It has an entry in Eberhart's Mysterious Creatures.

This is the second satellite photo of the Napo/Amazon Confluence. If you look in the smaller of the two forked channels you will see an anaconda, which I believe to be of similar proportions to the one in the Morona Cocha incident 2 weeks ago near Iquitos, Peru.

GLEN VAUDREY: The Peruvian "Giant Snake"

Glen is one of the newer additions to the bloggo family. He wrote to me out of the blue last year to ask wherther we wanted a Western Isles volume in our Mystery Animals of Britain series. We argeed that we did indeed want one, and commissioned him. What we were not expecting was such a bloody good writer and all round nice guy, who - by the way - is writing several other volumes for us, and he is even going to be speaking at the Weird Weekend. Wayhay!!

I just thought I should add a few comments to the ongoing giant snake saga. Having looked at the this mornings pictures I couldn’t honestly tell you if I thought it was a giant snake or a sandbank to me both points of view hold water and are of equal merit. Certainly I have great difficulty imagining a snake of such size being in existence and yet undiscovered by science but then who am I to judge on Greg and Mike’s opinion, after all I like to think that Stellar’s sea cow is going to be rediscovered in the next year and it’s only a question of time before the great auk appears in our northern waters.

I can also see that the picture could be nothing more than a simulacrum, just nature playing tricks with sand, water and trees. But without being an expert on the geography of the region I question, I can not discount the possibility of the image indeed being a very large snake.

It all makes a good conundrum just enough information to tease, without the obvious fakery that some other recent mystery animal sighting have been plagued with.

I for one want to thank Greg and Mike for sharing this information with the CFZ family and hope that there pursuit of this giant one day yield the goal that may of us long for the discovery of a new mystery animal.

It goes without saying I wish them the best of luck in their continued searching for evidence.

PERUVIAN "GIANT SNAKE" PICTURES RELEASED THROUGH THE CFZ BLOGGO

After a week of negotiations with Mike and Greg Warner, the CFZ has the exclusive rights to release all the pictures from their Peruvian expedition.

Greg sent these with the following message: "These are the two shots we got that we believe is Yacumama or giant anaconda. It looks like the head to me and part of the body surfacing at the other side of the channel."

Unfortunately, although Richard and I have examined all the pictures in depth, and have spent a long time discussing the matter both by telephone and e-mail with Greg, we disagree completely with their conclusions and believe that these pictures show nothing more than a natural formation of mud or sand.

However, at this point, may we say that we are not for a moment doubting Greg and Mike's sincerity.

They appear to be very nice people who have worked very hard, and have always been open and honest with us. We, too, have always tried to behave like gentlemen, and the whole affair has been conducted in a scientific and civilised manner.

We are surprised that over the last week or so as this story has broken, that we were the only cryptozoological website to give them the courtesy of examining their evidence. Indeed we were the only cryptozoological website to bother covering this story. When you think of the torrents of press such ridiculous claims as last year's Georgia bigfoot, the two Montauk Monsters, and this year's ludicrous Quatari goblin got, I find this highly peculiar. In fact, I don't understand it at all.

When we first saw these photographs, Richard wrote to Greg:

Dear Greg

Thank you for sending over the photographs and co-ordinates.

I have spent the morning looking over them. I said that I would be totally honest in my assessment, and I will be.

I can see nothing in any of these photographs to indicate a giant snake. The picture of the creature's head with another part of the body protruding out of the water further on, looks to me like a sandbank or lump of mud. It, to my eyes at least, does not resemble a snake. Perhaps if the image had been sharper it may have revealed more.

The toppled trees and areas of destruction look like rain damage. Rainforest trees are notoriously shallow-rooted and easily ripped up by floods.

There may well be huge snakes in the area, indeed I believe that the green anaconda gets far larger than we imagine. However, I can't conceive of us getting funding for a second expedition on the back of these pictures. I'm sorry to sound so negative but I have to be honest. There are far more disappointments in cryptozoology than there are triumphs.

I wish you the best of luck with any further endeavours you embark upon.

I appreciate the time you spent on this even though I can’t accept ‘looks like a sandbank’ as an informed answer. There is no sand as this area is heavily flooded as you can see almost to the top of some trees.

To be honest, I was hoping for something more scientific with an analysis and opinion on all the evidence supplied to you but I respect your opinion and believe that you are sincere.
You guys have been fair with us so I want to offer you the same courtesy and keep to our deal.
It’s time to put this to the court of public opinion so my father has agreed to let you publish all the data we sent you on the condition that it is presented as our data (Mike Warner & Greg Warner) without subjective opinions from either party and it is presented in full (all the images we supplied with annotations also). Let people decide for themselves.

There are still questions that need answered and someone out there may have some interesting views on the matter:

• What happened in Nueva Tacna?
• Why are all these ‘major and ‘minor’ interconnecting channels running through the area?
• What is this creature if it moves on video and disappears from the channel if it isn’t a reptile?
• What happened in Morona Cocha last week when the “Black Boa” destroyed a house on the lake?
• What is this shape in the middle of the area on Google, coincidence?
• Why do the locals persist with accounts of the Yacumama in the area?
• The evidence we supplied is only a sample of what we have but it is a start.
  

We give your permission place these all the material on your CFZ site. I also, suggest that you copy our email correspondence also so that there is full transparency.

Please ensure all private information like email addresses and telephone numbers are deleted please. If anyone wants to contact us then they can do it through CFZ. We are continuing our work in the area and are sending someone to interview villagers in the settlements of Morona Cocha although we must make it clear that we do not believe this is the same creature from the Napo/Amazon.

Ultimately, we would like to go back to the Napo/Amazon and survey the area more, with better equipment and a helicopter rather than a Cesna but we’ll see how things pan out.
