WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

CRYPTOLINK: Monsters of the Finger Lakes

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

Among the most intriguing stories are the numerous reported sightings in the deepest of the lakes of large aquatic creatures: lake monsters. Each of ...

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN CARRIES ON AS USUAL

The Gonzo Daily: Monday/Tuesday
YER EDITOR SEZ:
Thank you all for your kindness and good wishes. Corinna and I are very touched by the amount of love that has been coming our way over the last few days. She does not want to go into the specifics of her condition until all the facts are in, so please forgive me for not answering many of your questions.
Just a couple of administrative matters. For those of you old enough to remember the Falklands War, you may recall the little bloke who stood on the steps of the MoD each evening giving a briefing to the world's press. I feel increasingly like that man. Please use emails or Facebook Messenger to contact rather than telephone, so that we can keep the lines open and not alarm Mother. And please contact me rather than my darling wife.
And please keep on sending the love.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN ON HIS KNEES

    The Gonzo Daily: Sunday

    YER EDITOR SEZ:

Corinna is home after her operation, but is still in considerable pain. It appears that Corinna’s condition is more serious than we had originally been told, and will need significant further treatment. She is home and is being as magnificent and brave as I would have expected her to be. I love and respect that woman so much more than I can put into words; but then I always was a bloody awful hack writer.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS LOOKING FOR THE CUTTY WREN

    The Gonzo Daily: Thursday

    YER EDITOR SEZ:

Today, and the next few days in fact, are likely to be somewhat non-standard. Corinna is unwell and currently undergoing various tests at North Devon District Hospital. I don't know - at this time (2:30) - whether she will be staying in or not. I don't believe there is any cause for alarm, and I shall not be getting properly worried until we have a firm diagnosis which contradicts that supposition. But please remember us all next time you commune with whatever deities you believe in.

Much gratitude and love to the entire Phillipson family for what they have done for us. And also to Graham who cut short his sojourn with family in order to come back and help here.It is at times like this when one realises how precious one's friends are.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN JUST IS. RIGHT?

    The Gonzo Daily: Wednesday

    YER EDITOR SEZ:

Today, Lilith (the little black cat) learned a valuable lesson. She jumped onto the roof of the bottom aviary, and from there down into the chicken run, whereupon the feathered ladies within chased her round and round in circles until she jumped back on the aviary and fled to safety. I think that anyone who doubts the fact that birds are the descendants of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaurs, should really come over here, buy a tin of sardines for a bribe. and sit down with Lilith and talk about the matter.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?

    Well, everything, actually!

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

    BIG CAT ROUND UP

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

    YER EDITOR SEZ:

Richard came up yesterday and told us all his adventures. Much to his and my excitement, we found that the camera trap pictures included one of a bear, as well as two jackals, and some wild boar. I always enjoy it when he visits. Sadly, because of his work commitments, that is not very often these days. Saturday was Corinna's and my 11th wedding anniversary (I am not sure whether those two words should be capitalised) and I truly don't know where the last decade and a bit has gone...

    HOPPING HENS AT GONZO

    The Gonzo Daily - Sunday
And for no real reason Sunday's notifications are done in rhyme
It's Sunday so again its time
to do the daily blogs in rhyme:
    Richard's back from Tajikistan,
In half an hour we'll see the man
and listen to his traveller's tales,
    the successes and the fails
and whether the news is good or black,
you'll see it all on On The Track...
Changing the subject completely, is there anyone reading this who has any experience in coding apps? Even more importantly, if you do, would you be prepared to lend your expertise to us for a few hours? Email me please at jon@eclipse.co.uk.
