I was up until stupid o'clock last night finishing the latest episode of On The Track, which will be up later today. The section where Corinna goes through the latest bird news is particularly worth watching as both Corinna and cameraman Graham were terrorised by the kittens climbing all over them and generally creating mayhem. Those cats really are complete hooligans. Mike Davis arrives for four more day's recording at about 3:00. I am looking forward to it, and I would just like to thank Mark Raynes for all his support and kind words....

*  Jon Downes, the editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who, together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange), puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon, which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus... did we mention the orange cat?

Graham mulls over the odd places Earthworms choose to live

I don't see why even upwardly-mobile worms choose to live under bags of rubbish.

I shifted a bag today and saw eight worms underneath. Do they discontentedly burrow around in flowerbeds and pop up every night for a look around and then one day think: 'Aha, that's where I'd rather be... lying on a hard surface, squashed under a smelly bag of trash.'

It seems a bit odd to me.

I TRIED TO SELL THE PICTURES TO HELLO MAGAZINE, BUT THEY WERE OUTBID BY THE CFZ BLOGGO

We are back home, very tired, but as you can see from these two exclusive images I did my bit giving away the CFZ Bloggo Sub-Editor Lizzy Clancy to her new husband Paul Bitakaramire. I think you will agree that this is a pretty good excuse for having left the blogs in the tender care of Graham for the last few days. Actually, I think he did pretty damn well....

A PARISH NOTICE

Just a quicky. Corinna and I will be away from Thursday to Monday (approximately). Graham will be running the Gonzo Daily, and the CFZ Blog Network in our abscence. He is usually ably assisted by Lizzy Clancy, but as we are away for her wedding and she has done me the honour of asking me to give her away, I think she will have other things on her mind this weekend....

JON'S JOURNAL: Porriwiggles and pugmarks

This has been a remarkably busy week with all sorts of things happening, both good and bad: Dave B-P has been in hospital, a close friend is getting divorced, I have had various CFZ-related traumas and on top of this, my consultant has changed my medication and I am now floating around on a slightly spacy cloud, which is fun if a little disconcerting.

So I am a little behind on my nature diary.

Back on Sunday after we had all number of mild adventures on Northam Burrows (see HERE, and HERE and HERE) we went back to Huddisford to take Prudence for a walk. One cannot really let her out on the Burrows on a Sunday because there are too many other dogs - many not on leads - and she is a little unpredictable where her fellow canids are concerned.

There we noted that 'our' tadpoles had hatched and were developing nicely.


Actually, that is not quite true. We noted that they had hatched about ten days before, as you can see in this brace of pictures, which not only show the newly hatched porriwiggles, but also show a middle-aged Hawkwind fan filming them for next month's OTT:



The trackways, which provide entrance and egress to the woodland, were well used, especially this one, which shows deer tracks as well as the tracks of a sizeable carnivore. We were quite excited at first, but Richard F. says that they are a dog.

NEXT WEEK

Corinna and I are going to be away for five or six days from tomorrow. We will still have access to a computer so as far as I know the blog will continue as normal. However, Graham is running the CFZ in my absence and will take over bloggystuff if necessary.

BYE BYE FOR A WEEK

Corinna and I are off to The Unconvention, and after that we shall be visiting Corinna's mother in Rutland. We shall therefore be away, and out of contact, until next Wednesday at the earliest. This is old-school out of contact meaning the bliss of having no computer, so if you email me don't be offended when I don't reply for a week or so.

Graham and Prudence are in charge of the CFZ, and Graham and Lizzy (with contributions from Oll Lewis and Andrew May) are in charge of the blog. I am sure both teams will do a superlative job.

A CRYPTID AT THE ZOO

Graham is currently removing what is left of my stuff from the loft of my erstwhile home in Exeter. Amongst piles of rubbish he found a very tatty and coverless guide book to London Zoo from sometime in the 1930s. It includes this: a reference to the third species of Asian giant salamander that was at that time believed to exist, although these days it is usually considered to be a synonym for the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus).











The type specimen was found in Hong Kong during the 1920s when a drain in the Royal Botanic Gardens burst....

GRAHAM IS AWAY

Graham left yesterday for a fun-packed fortnight during which he will see Hawkwind ("goodness me," I hear you exclaim. "We never knew he was a fan!"), fly to the Isle of Man to help his mother move house, and visit his aunt in Budleigh.

We expect him to return on or about Thursday 2nd of June. Have fun, dude....

UPDATE

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been so kind and understanding during the recent attack of illness that has floored the CFZ. I am on Day 33 I think, and although I am much better than I was, I am still subject to bouts of coughing and breathlessness, and I still feel several sandwiches short of a full picnic most of the time.


Corinna is much the same, and although Graham is largely better, he is still very run down and has to sleep far more of the time than usual. Oll is also on the mend, but like us, `the mend` is a slow and painful process.


We are getting slowly back to normal but it is a slow process, and I would not be surprised if it is several more weeks before we are back to normal, and even longer before all the backlog is sorted.

A damsel in distress makes her gratitude known

Liz Clancy would like to say a big thank you to Graham Inglis. Though a split infinitive is no match for her razor-sharp brain, numbers really ain't her thing. Neither are HMRC's tax returns and Graham has cheerfully come to her aid two years running now. Thank you!

MAYA: People of the Corn

On Friday night, despite the rigours of flu, Graham, Corinna and I went to the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington, for the opening night of an exhibition: Maya: People of the Corn by Henry Hartley and Weronika Mliczewska. They spent seven months amongst the Maya people of Mexico, and the resulting films and photographs are fascinating. Talking to Henry for a few minutes (for OTT) I learned that there is a lot of stuff of fortean interest, so we have asked them to come to the Weird Weekend and talk about it....

The exhibition is on until the end of the month.

HAWKWIND DONE BY A BARBERSHOP QUARTET

You will remember that before Christmas we celebrated Graham's absence from the roost on his annual trip to see his favourite rock band by playing various versions of their most popular song. A week or so after his return, still riddled with swine flu, the subject has come up again. Over on his blog Graham posts a video from Channel 5 of a barbershop quartet playing tribute to the band...

THE CFZ IN WINTER: Frozen chicken (well nearly)

Whilst Prudence spends most of her day asleep in front of the Rayburn.... Graham comes in with the chicken's water dish frozen solid..

SNUFFLING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND

It is the first proper snow of the winter and Prudence is not sure what to make of it...

The big question today is whether or not the village is snowed in because today is the day that Graham is scheduled to return from Hawkwinding, and Oliver is scheduled to leave for what is euphemistically described as the `Festive Season`. Only time will tell.
