WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

I TRIED TO SELL THE PICTURES TO HELLO MAGAZINE, BUT THEY WERE OUTBID BY THE CFZ BLOGGO

We are back home, very tired, but as you can see from these two exclusive images I did my bit giving away the CFZ Bloggo Sub-Editor Lizzy Clancy to her new husband Paul Bitakaramire. I think you will agree that this is a pretty good excuse for having left the blogs in the tender care of Graham for the last few days. Actually, I think he did pretty damn well....

A PARISH NOTICE

Just a quicky. Corinna and I will be away from Thursday to Monday (approximately). Graham will be running the Gonzo Daily, and the CFZ Blog Network in our abscence. He is usually ably assisted by Lizzy Clancy, but as we are away for her wedding and she has done me the honour of asking me to give her away, I think she will have other things on her mind this weekend....

If anyone wants to get hold of me by e-mail between thursday and monday/tuesday next week, please cc the email to graham@cfz.org.uk. He will pass the information on to me....

LIZ CLANCY: Fowl Football

Ewood Park was all of a flutter when a chicken bearing the slogan 'Kean Out' on a placard was sent onto the pitch during a match between Blackburn Rovers and away team Wigan FC. Fans released the chicken during the football match on Monday to register their dismay at likely relegation - which WAS the outcome of the match. The fowl, which also sported a Rovers scarf (in some reports, a flag), was intended to be a dig at the club's owners, Venky's, an Indian poultry company.

LIZ CLANCY: APOCALYPSE 1080p: Last Day of the World

It's been a long time since my last post for the CFZ bloggo but I have several incredibly good excuses. One is that I'm currently working on a film project and would like to invite CFZ bloggo readers to get involved. And CFZ TV.

In Montreal, back in January 1999, a couple of friends made a simple bet between themselves: produce an original short film every month until the New Millennium and the End of the World. Twelve months later these friends were disappointed to learn that the Apocalypse had been postponed, but they had kept their bet and 200 short films later, KINO was born!

http://www.planetekino.com/index.php?s=kino&lang=en

Twelve years later, as the year 2012 looms and the 'Mayan Doomsday' silly season appears set to strike with full force, we thought we’d commemorate KINO’s apocalyptic origins by posing ONE simple question:

IF the world is ending on 21st December 2012 (as doomsday theorists claim) how would YOU spend the world’s very Last Day?

Fulfilling your wildest ‘bucket list’ desires? Saying your last goodbyes? Getting plastered? Cowering inside your bomb shelter? Making passionate love?

Partially inspired by the Ridley Scott documentary ‘Life in a Day’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Behind the Mask’ music video, Manchester Making Films Inspirational [MMFI] and SirClancelot Films are inviting Kino filmmakers worldwide to star in the ‘Apocalypse 1080p’ cinema project by sending us your most creative films showing how YOU plan to spend the Last Day of the World. The best footage will be used to create an amazing world-sourced, feature-length science fiction movie to be released in December 2012.

From something as basic as a 30-second mobile phone video clip of your last will and testament before the '2012 apocalypse' to the most elaborate 'countdown to Armageddon' flash mob, feel free to have all the fun in the world in creating your masterpieces.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING ON THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED?
Imagine it. Film it. Send it in.

Pull out all creative stops. Think outside the box. Let your creativity (and cameras) run wild and send us your most amazing 21/12 'bucket list' films!

Submissions may be filmed with mobile phone, camcorder, DSLR or any other means. They may be of any length and should strive for a minimum resolution of 1080p HD (though films of lesser resolution will be accepted).

Open a Free account and upload your films to Vimeo at:

http://vimeo.com/

Then send us the web link to your film (along with your full name, phone number and email address) via Facebook Message.

Alternatively, you can post your entries on CD or DVD to:

SirClancelot Films
88 Abbey Crescent
Heywood
Lancashire
OL10 4UG

(Remember to enclose your full name, phone number and email address. Submissions are non-returnable and may be re-edited as needed.)

Closing date for entries: 30 June 2012. Please disregard the 'Tuesday, March 20, 2012' closing date indicated at the top. (For some reason Facebook will not allow you to create an event that lasts for more than 4 months.)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Could all participants refrain from adding any names, titles, dates or any other visual information to the films they submit. These will be added in post-production. Furthermore, in submitting material for this project you are doing so under the terms of the Creative Commons Public License.

MAKE THE LAST DAY OF THE WORLD COUNT FOR SOMETHING.
Imagine it. Film it. Send it in.

LIZ CLANCY: Garra Rufa treatment may be fishy

The first I heard of this recent craze was on a celebrity edition of Come Dine With Me, which saw ex-Coronation-Street actors dipping their toes in fish tanks before dinner at the house of the chap who used to play Des Barnes.

Since then shops have been opening up all over the place and existing beauty salons have been investing in bowls of feet-eating fish. However, health professionals are concerned and having the dead skin nibbled off one's tootsies by Garra Rufa is now illegal in several US states and over here the RSPCA have voiced their misgivings.

The Health Protection Agency conducted an investigation into the use of so-called doctor fish for beauty therapy and published updated advice in October.

In a nutshell: if you're fit and healthy, and the spa you choose have high standards when it comes to hygiene, the risk of catching anything from fish, tank or water is low.

However, if you suffer from health conditions that weaken the immune system (diabetes, for example) you're advised to give fish spas a wide berth and if you wax your legs, fish pedicures should wait a minimum of twenty-four hours.

LIZ CLANCY writes...

Another late night here at CFZ Greater Manchester and again, I'm having a bit of writer's block. Day one of UnCon will have now ended and I hope our people in the thick of it had a wonderful first day. For my part, I've been at work and at the shops and drawing fluffy white bunnies with small children, so there's a little animal reference to keep this post vaguely on-topic.

This time we have for you today a review by Richard Freeman of a new Boggy Creek film amongst other cryptozoological diamonds.

Tomorrow I promise to try my best to get a more decent blog done for you after sleep....

LIZ CLANCY writes...

...but goodness knows what!

It's one in the morning as I type this. It's been a crazy week here at CFZ Greater Manchester and I've only just got around to typing my editorial. And now I can't think what to put.

Well, for a start, I'm sure all our readers out there join me in wishing Jon and Corinna a fun and fruitful trip. I remember my first (and to date only, as it happens) UnConvention. It was an amazing experience and I hope to go again sometime.

Erm...for a finish because I'm really tired and need to get to bed asap, We've got some good stuff lined up for you today (Saturday). Glen Vaudrey travels to the U.S. of A. for The Whole Wide World, Jon remembers his childhood as a reptile gets chewed and other stuff happens that I can't just remember 'cause I need sleep. Toodles!

BYE BYE FOR A WEEK

Corinna and I are off to The Unconvention, and after that we shall be visiting Corinna's mother in Rutland. We shall therefore be away, and out of contact, until next Wednesday at the earliest. This is old-school out of contact meaning the bliss of having no computer, so if you email me don't be offended when I don't reply for a week or so.

Graham and Prudence are in charge of the CFZ, and Graham and Lizzy (with contributions from Oll Lewis and Andrew May) are in charge of the blog. I am sure both teams will do a superlative job.

Until next week. Over and Out!

PS: In case of emergency email graham@cfz.org.uk

LIZ CLANCY: 'No pets' no more

Promising news for all pooch pals and felid friends that don't or won't own their own home: the Dogs Trust have a campaign called Lets With Pets that's intended to make it less of a hassle renting a property for dog- and cat-owners. Like me, you may have been more than daunted by 'no pets' warnings in hosts of property ads and ended up renting a place not fit for the strayest of strays, just to keep the furry one of your family living with you. Lets With Pets encourages letting agents and landlords (and ladies) to welcome responsible dog- and cat-owners. The campaign provides advice and information so those with the keys won't mind handing them over to Rover. To help, you can fill in a survey (www.letswithpets.org.uk) about your own experiences.

Unfortunately, if you're partial to pythons or in love with llamas, you're probably on your own.

LIZ CLANCY: Animal waste doesn't always go to....

Marketing experts behind one of Peru's major tourist attractions might be about to launch a new advertising campaign with the slogan 'Machu Picchu - It's Made of Poo!'

Not really. Though they should.

The ancient Inca city wasn't strictly made of the brown stuff - I think the buildings are probably traditional stone and similar - but Alex Chepstow-Lusty of the Lima-based French Institute of Andean Studies has been studying the mud in Marcaccocha, a small lake in the Cuzco area, for some years now and his team have found a link between an increase in maize pollen and the presence of excrement-eating mites. Conclusion: farming leads to civilization and the people who became the Incas used llama dung as fertilizer.

The current indigenous peoples, the Quechua, still follow aspects of the Incan lifestyle, which includes using llama droppings for fertilizer and cooking fuel. So in a sense, they like to have their cack and eat off it, so to speak....

LIZ CLANCY: Heywood Headlines

Just to prove that even a remarkable story can be exaggerated, on my way to work last week I noticed that part of the town had been cordened off and was being guarded by the police. The taxi driver informed me that there had been an explosion. At work and after lunch one of my colleagues came in to tell us she had been over to find out the full story; there had indeed been an explosion at Bar Vino (officially renamed Miami Ice a while ago but locals take little notice of such things; The Old Fashioned will ever be to us The Queen Anne).

Of interest to us here is the fate of the rabbit who lived in the flat above the bar. Apparently, though the whole building burnt down, firefighters found the fluffy-eared fellow among the wreckage and rubble after they had put the fire out, and he was completely unharmed. Not so.

Waffles, as The Heywood Advertiser reported this morning, was indeed left with hardly a scratch on him but rather than miraculously emerging from the ashes like the Heywood Phoenix (buy our beer; visit our health/council/learning/social centre), was rescued by the afore-mentioned Firemen Sams from the flames as they still burned. Incredibly lucky, yes; asbestos bunny, nope.

Headline number two: we have a new fish shop just two or three doors down from the one I bought my supper from last night, except unlike Ruby's, this one sells fish intended for the tank rather than the tummy. We wish 'em well at CFZ Heywood and promise to pop in some time without salt and vinegar. And to report the shop's name to CFZers as soon as the sign goes up....

LIZ CLANCY: Canine conundrum

We've been living in the new house a couple of months now and on the whole we like it very much but there's summat up with the dog. For the last three weeks he has been a colossal pain in the backside.

It began with our little Pal waking us up first thing in the morning (and progressively during the night as well) by diving on one person's chest before running in to the other and repeating the action. He pants as if he's too hot but is usually shivering at the same time like he's cold. He dribbles all over the house. We let him out in the back yard but he's not satisfied.

We've checked with neighbours and none have a female dog in heat that ours perhaps could smell. Besides, he's been neutered.

We've taken to keeping our bedroom doors shut so he can't annoy us in the small hours of the morning so he's taken to shredding the boxes we've yet to unpack or (amazingly for such a titchy dog) jumping up onto the kitchen counters to knock stuff over! In the last couple of days he's taken to doing this whenever we leave the house.

Any ideas, please???

LIZ CLANCY is back

It has been a traumatic and arduous few weeks without the internet, especially as with the new job and the house-move I've not had time to go to the library more than once a week to check the blog, but I am very, very, very, very, very excited to declare that from (by the time you read this) last night, the internet at the new house is in full working order, so bad spellers watch out!

LIZ CLANCY: Mole Madness

I'm a bit late with this one, but apparently back in February Durham County Council insisted upon a risk assessment before pest control experts could rid two cemeteries of moles. Rookhope and Cowshill had been plagued by the little blighters for some time but when Councillor John Shuttleworth asked for something to be done he was told via email that the traps had been ordered but he would have to wait a week for a health and safety officer to assess the area before the trapping could be done.

The risk assessment will cost £47 before any moles have even been trapped, whereas before the area was taken over by Durham County Council, a local mole-catcher would usually charge £30 maximum, without the need for any fannying about and form-filling beforehand. But the council reckon that the previous chap wasn't qualified enough. In the meantime, the problem got worse.

LIZ CLANCY: not sure what to call this post

On a trip to Akbar's wonderful restaurant in Manchester's Castlefield area the other day I found out that in a previous incarnation Jon Downes was a far-eastern god. Not sure which one but I make no apologies for being too busy eating to ask someone....

LIZ CLANCY: 3 Owls has a successor, almost

According to the Rochdale Observer, this year will see the Rochdale Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary open up to fill the gap caused by the closure of Three Owls Bird sanctuary and hospital last year. The new sanctuary is set to take care of "small wildlife," according to Carley Smith, one of the chairmen of the sanctuary and also one of the key figures in the Save Our Sanctuary campaign for Three Owls.

The sanctuary has seven directors and one treasurer, who are currently applying for charity status as well as searching for a suitable location. Though some of those involved are former Three-Owlers, Nigel Fowler, manager of Three Owls, won't be joining the new team, though has said he has no problem with its inception.

Rochdale Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary's Facebook and Twitter pages can be found at the links below.

A damsel in distress makes her gratitude known

Liz Clancy would like to say a big thank you to Graham Inglis. Though a split infinitive is no match for her razor-sharp brain, numbers really ain't her thing. Neither are HMRC's tax returns and Graham has cheerfully come to her aid two years running now. Thank you!
