Dear Kithra has waxed lyrical on the subject of Oll's new story, and drops charming and ladylike (but very definite) hints that it is time that Mr Matthews provided us with some more episodes of the Cats of Upper Minster.

Fleur wrote yesterday to tell us about this item on eBay. They are two hand-coloured woodcuts on one leaf from the classic German edition of Pliny the Elder translated by Johann Heydens. They are from 1565, and my avaricious heart wants them.

But they are, as Fleur points out, a bit pricey...

The museum will have to do without this time.

This webcomic was being discussed on the forteana yahoo group the other day, and as I agree with the general consensus of opinion that it is both funny and sweet, as well as being vaguely on topic, I have decided to give it a plug here.

ALAN FRISWELL WRITES..

I sent this to Jon the other week, as I was not sure of the date of his birthday. Unfortunately, it didn't get through in time, but better late than never, as some twit says. I used a picture of the cyclops from Harryhausen's Seventh Voyage of Sinbad for the e-card, rather than a bigfoot or chupacabra (s), because the important characteristic here is inspiration. Harryhausen's work inspired me and doubtless thousands-if not millions more, if not actually to take up special effects, to view the universe in a more magical way. Jon, like Harryhausen, is doing his considerable bit to show that the world can be a place where mysteries can be solved, and dreams fulfilled. Inspirational people like Jon and Ray are desperately needed in our world in which the forces of inertial probability often seem to pull towards the negative. And needless to say, I'm very honoured to count him as a friend.

So a belated Happy Birthday Jon, and looking forward to the next fifty years,(at least!)

NEWS FROM THE FISHY OUTREACH PROJECT

The baby gourami in the pub tank continue to thrive, although they are still only at the planktonic stage. I don't think that I have ever seen baby fish quite so small, although many years ago when I was in Pembrokeshire at the Field Studies Council I was wading around on the marshy shores of a lake when I came upon a swarm of thousands of baby sticklebacks that were nearly as small....

We are currently awaiting confirmation from the North Devon Hospice who have agreed in principle to our installing and maintaining a tank there....
