WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS TAKING THE DAY OFF

The Gonzo Daily - Sunday

And so another Sunday's here
and so once again it's time
to make sure Polyhymnia's here
and do the Gonzo blogs in rhyme

the way that I do every week
with the slightest motivation
'cos it amuses this poor freak
and others in this Gonzo Nation

So we start with issue 56
of the Gonzo Magazine
there are groovy words and pics
and interviews to keep you keen
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/gonzo-weekly-magazine-56.html

Issue 56 of Gonzo Weekly is out, featuring interviews with Percy Jones of Brand X, Pam Windo about her extraordinary career with her late husband Gary, Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and Robert Wyatt. We have Cyrille Verdeaux going through the Clearlight compilation track by track. We have Hawkwind live in Southampton, me on the new George Harrison biography, more news from Clepsydra and XNA, Doug Harr on Rick Wakeman, and Orrin Hare on the enigmatic L-Voag. We have a visit to a Victorian freakshow with Crystal Grenade and columns from C J Stone and Kev Rowland and more news, reviews, features and comments than you can shake a stick at. And its free.

So as not to miss next week's copy (and also to make an old hippy editor very happy) subscribe here.

But now to move on to the next
news story (no we cannot linker)
the Track of the Day is (I suspect)
Joey Molland from Badfinger
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-gonzo-track-of-day-joey-molland.html

And now I have (from me to you)
a Belgian Deviants review
which you might possibly have missed
extolling the virtues of the anarchist
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/belgian-mick-farrenandy-colquhoun-review_15.html

And now the latest Strange Fruit Show
from Neil Nixon down in Kent
now live on our web radio
I'm posting it with good intent
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/strange-fruit-49-playlist_14.html

And now something that I suspect
you may not have heard (but wow it's good)
the new album by Sky Architect
if you've not heard it, you really should
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-german-review-of-sky-architect-google.html

And our last post (and you should know it)
is from our friend Thom the World Poet
a man who is very good with words
from the profound to the absurd
http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2013/12/thom-world-poet-daily-poem_15.html

And that is it from me this week
I'm signing off, signed Jon the Freak

*  The Gonzo Daily is a two-way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at  jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work or even just say hello, please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow....

*  The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html

* We should probably mention here that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

*  Jon Downes, the editor of all these ventures (and several others), is an old hippy of 54 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) - puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon, which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus...did we mention the orange cat?

THE MONSTER Hayley Stevens

The Monster Hayley Stevens

Choppy waters, hiding monsters,
Something rises, catching eyes,
Swirling up, liquid shadows,
Depth of colour, monstrous size

Creatures Swimming, break the surface,
Fleeting sighting, ‘what was that?’
Body gliding, twisting, looping,
Water slides from otters back

Fear the monster, see the monster,
Whispered voices, ‘So I hear…’
Feed the monster, feed the story,
Mystery thrives, sense disappears.

RICHARD MUIRHEAD: Winged Cat

Here is a poem I wrote a while ago called Winged Cat.

WINGED CAT

Winged cats are not a product of too much LSD,
They really do exist, a rare skin disorder, extending
the fur, fortunately not occuring in humans (I think.)
When was the last time you reported
a woman or man with wide flesh flaps coming
out of his arms walking down your
high street like Bat-Man
(or should that be Cat-Man?)
at midnight?
Or do you fancy a twelve month stint
locked up in an asylum?

RICHARD MUIRHEAD: Weird Wildlife Crisps

WEIRD WILDLIFE CRISPS

To save myself from starvation in the coming apocalypse,
I have decided on a wreckless and exciting venture
into the culinary unknown:
`Weird Wildlife Crisps`.
To test how well my new range of flavours is
doing I saunter into the nearest bar
like the macho man I am not.
“I say old bean, may I try some porcupine
and bat flavour crisps?”
“Er, what….?” But I interrupt,
“ Well how about octopus and
cucumber?” The bar man
stutters and goes red,
“OK I`ll settle for rabbit
and weasel” I try and
help. He turns and I
observe his fingers
dialing the local psychiatric
hospital number and I
turn and run as I have done
so many times before.

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES: T H E M E R M A I D - A P O E M

Today, folks, a rare poem. Rare for my blog I mean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

T H E M E R M A I D

“This shouldn`t have happened” the first mate said,
gesticulating at the catch of the millennium.
Which was thrown back, hair and torso upper-most
into the salty depths and the now mute body sank
heavily down towards her submarine kingdom.

Then a row broke out on deck, the horror
of it all set against cold science and reason.
Ten years later, one sailor rocks mute in his freezing
untidy care home room, the other - he took his life long ago,
incapable of handling the enormity of it all.

Whilst thousands of leagues below, the mermaid`s realm lies serene.

OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

http://cryptozoologynews.blogspot.com/

On this day in 1892 the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson died. One of Tennyson's poems was:

The Kraken

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

And now, the news:

Thousands of new species discovered in vast ocean ...
One species becomes extinct in England every fortn...
Theropod and sauropod dinosaurs sighted in PNG?
Climate Change Hits Southeast Australia Fish Speci...
Mystery kangaroo put down after car collision ... ...
Gorillas may be key to malaria mystery
Lost and found: Census of Marine Life turns up hun...

Hmm, they didn't find this though did they?

BILLY FARLAND: Crypto Haiku

Monster in Loch Ness
What could you possibly be?
Will we ever know?

Crashing through the woods,
Bigfoot in America
leaving giant prints

Tentacled beast
Rises from the depths
A colossal squid

NEW GUEST BLOGGER: Maria Clancy

I am very pleased to introduce you all to a new guest blogger, namely my Mum Maria Clancy who not only introduced me to the world of cryptozoology and Forteana when I was still but a babe in arms, but also came up with the following poem:

Arachne the spider has no legs;

She's not like any other.

She'll nip you if you get to close

Then blame it on her brother.

LARS THOMAS: On the subject of leopard hairs

A leopard in Huddisford Wood
had dropped some hairs where it stood
they were found on a lane
by a Brit and a Dane
who both exclaimed: This is good!
