Carl went home about half an hour ago, but he will be back soon. In the meantime Graham is fixing the museum roof as a dry run for fixing the roof of the east wing next week. Last night my old mate Paul Whitrow turned up for a couple of hours and played us music from his new project, and told us all sorts of rock and roll war stories. I did a radio interview late last night, and I wish I hadn't bothered; it was one of these puerile, laddish things that never cease to irritate me. Twenty years ago I might have found it more amusing than I do now. I should have known better than to accept, and I hope I will know better next time.

Changing the subject completely, is there anyone reading this who has any experience in coding apps? Even more importantly, if you do, would you be prepared to lend your expertise to us for a few hours? Email me please at jon@eclipse.co.uk.

He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus...did we mention Archie and the Cats?

The other day I ran a competition here on the blogs, more in hope than in any real expectation that anyone would be stupid enough to go on for it.  After all, who would be stupid enough, apart from me, to write a rap song about parsnips?

I’ve known Andy for very nearly twenty years; I have published his books, I have been the subject of his scurrilous writings and over that time we not only remained friends but have spend an enormous amount of time recommending obscure hippy music to each other.  So I am kicking myself for not having predicted that this peculiar Yorkshireman would have been the winner of my stupidly tongue-in-cheek competition….

It's Sunday, and mildly hungover, I sit at my computer
to write a page of stupid rhymes that I hope are going to suit ya
just like I do every week, but now I've got good news my friend
we can confirm that Syd and Bob are coming to the Weird Weekend

Syd telephoned me late last night whilst I was in my cups
and watching The X Files with Mama while taking frequent sups
from a very large brandy and coke I was holding in my hand
but after the horrible week I've had I hope you'll understand

I always write the Sunday blogs in badly metred verse,
mainly cos it amuses me (trust me it could be worse)
and then I take my Sunday off and believe me it suits
me to sit down and read a book or just look at my newts

So when I've done these Sunday blogs I may go back to bed
or I may sit in the garden and just read a book instead
or maybe go to Huddisford and take the dogs and Mother out
But I'm probably just going to doss around and do absolutely now't

Tommy Ramone, the last surviving founding member of seminal US punk band The Ramones, has died aged 62 in New York, the group has announced. The drummer passed away in hospice care on Friday following treatment for bile duct cancer, US media report.

Born in Hungary, Ramone immigrated to the US in the 1950s.

He started The Ramones with three friends from a New York high school in 1974. The band has been credited with the invention of punk rock. Although they were never commercially successful, their unique sound helped shape rock music and is still often cited as inspirations to new generations of musicians.

Their hit songs I Wanna Be Sedated and Blitzkrieg Bop, among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Hi there, its me, yes I'm still alive

But I have had a hell of a week
far too much for this particular freak
so last night I slept for fifteen hours straight
and didn't get up until frightfully late

And I was still drinking my wake up tea
when Saskia my student IMd me
and asked me if I could possibly guide her
through a college assignment on the Siberian Tiger

Well, I am very fond of that young lady
so I didn't say no and I didn't say maybe
I took a drag from my fag and said of course
I would help her study for her college course

So I did all that and I cuddled the dogs,
but now I am back to work on the blogs
it'll be stupidly late when I finish them all
but it is the Lord's Day after all

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have no doubt noticed that today's notifications are going out about twelve hours earlier than usual. There is a simple reason for this. Corinna has a cold and would like to take as much of the weekend off as possible, whereas I have music to record, books to read, dogs to play with and a hedgehog hutch to supervise the construction of.
