WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. Well, everything, actually!

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN JUST IS! DO YOU WANNA MAKE SOMETHING OF IT?

    The Gonzo Daily: Monday/Tuesday

    Spirits Burning/Clearlight/Herman’s Hermits/Rick Wakeman/Tony Klinger

Yesterday was a very strange day. I try to do nothing on weekends, with the notable exemption of the Sunday blogs. However, things don't always work out like that, and yesterday I found myself doing a recording session with Mike Davis, in the middle of which we took delivery of a cold and hungry baby collared dove. These are, in fact, a species of mild cryptozoological importance. Until the early years of the 20th Century they where a central and southern Asian species, but they began expanding their range westward, reaching Germany by the 1940’s and the U.K. By 1956. They first bred here 2 years later, and I still remember my grandmother, who was a keen bird watcher, being very exited in the early 1960’s when they first nested in her garden in Hampshire!

The little fellow had survived the night and is eating, and so it is nice to be able to hope that we will be able to rear it and release it back into the wild.

On top of that, I did a Bigfoot radio show, and several other bits and bobs which one really does not expect on one’s day off.

ANDREW MAY: Words from the Wild Frontier

News and stories from the remoter fringes of the CFZ blogosphere...

    From CFZ-USA:

HO HO HEN FOR THE WEEKEND

    The Gonzo Daily - Sunday
And for no real reason Sunday's notifications are done in rhyme

Sunday afternoon doing just what I like,
trying to coax a vocal out of Mike,
The backing got done with very few bugs
but our vocals sound just like the worst football thugs
not the sensitive souls that we want to achieve,
so we've both given up, Mike's just going to leave,
but as part of our policy that all you need's love,
we have just taken in a half fledged collared dove,
and when I've done the blogs I wanted you to know
I am appearing on a bigfoot radio show
and then at ten o'clock if everything is fine
I shall disappear off with a bottle of wine
and maybe some cheese (and I think that I may)
look back on another peculiar day

CRYPTOLINK: Skeleton of eight foot ‘serpent’ washes up in Cornwall (The return of Morgawr? Or another pilot whale?)

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

(Picture: Chris Crane/SWNS) A mysterious 8ft creature has been washed up on a beach - leading people to believe that it could be a Cornish mythical SEA SERPENT. Shocked Chris Crane, 61, was walking on the quiet shore of Charlestown, Cornwall, with wife Amanda, 59, when they saw a large black figure in the distance. See story SWSERPENT. The baffled couple got closer and realised it was a skeleton - but between them could not work out what creature it was. Mr Crane, who runs a Bed and Breakfast, took pictures and posted them on Twitter - and some people suggested it could be the mythical creature MORGAWR.A ‘serpent’ carcass has stunned walkers who found it washed up on a beach.

The eight foot skeleton has mostly rotted away, but the shape of its body, which bulges out towards the back, is still visible.

    Pink Fairies/Steve Hackett/John Shuttleworth

Yesterday we trundled off to Bideford to get the dressing on my ankle changed, and then I spent far too much money in Morrisons. Weirdly for a supermarket, they were playing music that I actually liked including T Rex and The Beach Boys, which combined with the disorientation that I always get in a sodding great barn full of harsh lighting and hundreds of people all talking at once, combined to produce a peculiar psychedelic effect. I am very tempted to go into Morrisons and sit there for a couple of hours with a digital recorder and see if I can get the basis for a record which would end up sounding like a cross between Throbbing Gristle and Brian Eno. Maybe i could call it 'Music for Consumers'.

    * The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. * The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.co.uk

    * We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

    * Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 57 who - together with a Jack Russell called Archie, an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, and two half grown kittens, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention Archie and the Cats?

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?

    Well, everything, actually!

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

There were very high winds during the night, but there seems to have been no damage done to the property or the grounds, and today we have a palke, eas#rly spring day which goes perfectly with my soundtrack of the Battleship Potemkin soundtrack by Messrs Tennant and Lowe. Yes, my Pet Shop Boys obsession  continues as I work my way, fairly randomly, through their body of work. The more I listen to them, the more I realise what a peculiar band they are!

    It’s all free!

And there are radio shows from Mack Maloney, Friday Night Progressive is having a well deserved week off, Strange Fruit, Jeremy Smith's new project The Seven Deadly Sins, and Canterbury Sans Frontieres. We also have columns from all sorts of folk including Roy Weard, Mr Biffo, Neil Nixon and the irrepressible Corinna. There is also a collection of more news, reviews, views, interviews and pademelons outside zoos (OK, nothing to do with small marsupials who have escaped from captivity, but I got carried away with things that rhymed with OOOOS) than you can shake a stick at. And the best part is IT's ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES:Some more mystery animals of Hong Kong Part 2

This is the second part of a blog on mystery animals in Hong Kong ,the data being collected over the last 3 years.I continue with the `I Grew up in Hong Kong in the 1970s/80s` Facebook group responses to my query:
    • Jennifer Bowskill. Small cat-like animals in tree tops on the Peak. Big black cats and monkeys killed and removed on Peak "a long time ago" due to building.According to Lee Gardens owner.
    • Joy Gomez. Tiger sighting 1986-87 at Hong Kong Island School campus.
    • Arthur Hacker. Japs let out for "shits and giggles" during their 1941-45 occupation all Hong Kong zoo animals.
    • On the `Hong Kong Was,Is and Forever will be my Home!` Facebook group 2014 (?) (Now this is interesting) Beanie Culley : Black sea horse with white spots - in a bucket ,Tai Tam Male. Eighteen inches long if tail uncurled.
    • South China Morning Post Facebook group (Date unknown, maybe 2014.) Wild boar,Old Peak Rd, HK Island.
    • Apes, 3-4ft high. Red squirrel. There are dark brown squirrels in HK, not red.
    • Pipers Hill Bob cat (= lynx?) This is north of Kowloon.
    • Anne Ozaris 300 yr old turtle,Sai Kung area 1960s.
    • Laurence Tsui Large lizards like Komodo dragons,New Territories. Could these have been large monitor lizards?
