WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

DO I OWE HIM A MEMORY (OF COURSE I DO, OF COURSE I DO)

During my recent bout of enforced idleness I have been in bed reading The Rest is Propoganda, the absolutely excellent autobiography by Steve Ignorant of Crass; a musical ensemble of whom I am rather fond. As I have written elsewhere, Crass were pivotal in my life, and indeed I based much of the philosophy of what would become the CFZ upon what they themselves did. I would recommend Igs's book to anyone, but one particular passage brought a lump to my throat.

Why?

Well, Steve, you got it slightly wrong. It wasn't a day centre it was Botchill, a residential hostel attatched to Langdon Hospital. And how do I know this? Because the bloke in the penultimate chapter of page 196 was me. I had completely forgotten the kindness of the drummer from Dirt but Steve's writings brought it all back.

Thanks mate!
And if any of you have ever wondered why the world's largest cryptozoological research organisation is run by a gaggle of middle-aged weirdoes living in a tumbledown old house in the arse-end of nowhere? Well it's mostly HIS fault....

A QUIZ FROM LARS T

Another little something for the blog - a little autumn quiz thing - how about asking people what this is?

KITHRA WRITES ABOUT THE NEW CFZ EXPEDITION

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES:MORE EVIDENCE FOR THE GIANT SALAMANDER IN HONG HONG?

Recently I have been speculating about the possibility of the existence up until, say, at least the 1920s of the giant salamander in Hong Kong. Today I found the following inconclusive evidence from The China Mail in 1910:

THE CHINA MAIL

THE FOUR-LEGGED FISH

Some time ago we made mention of a “four legged fish” in possession of the Chinese Mail. We have now been supplied with one of these interesting creatures from our Chinese contemporary. About two feet in length, possessing four legs and a rather long flat tail, it somewhat resembles a young crocodile. Anyone interested can see the strange creature at the
China Mail office, where it is on view. (1)

FIREBALL FROM CASSIE M

SHE WRITES: Now here is the formerly classified military footage courtesy of former NORAD General General Stanley A. Fullham:

CASSIE MORRISON MUSES ON MOTHMAN

Now, there are a lot of people writing a lot of things about the Mothman recently and I decided it was time I joined in the fray and shared some of my thoughts..

Cassie continues...

EDITOR'S NOTE: I hadn't realised that our Cass was a Mothman witness..

OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

http://cryptozoologynews.blogspot.com/

On this day in 1967 the Patterson-Gimlin bigfoot film was filmed. I have no pretensions of being a bigfoot expert but based on the evidence available at this time I believe that it was a hoax (although exactly who was in on the hoax and who was being hoaxed is defiantly an interesting question), but I'm certainly not the thought police or arrogant enough to say that because something is my opinion it must be true.
The various ins and outs of the film and the events surrounding it are summarised in a fairly balanced manner on the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterson-Gimlin_film so you can make up your own mind.
And now, the news:
