“Breaking News: Mermaidsare not real, U.S. government declares”This was an LA Times headline on July 5, 2012. If we can get past the fact that this isneither “breaking” nor “news”, what is left is a headline that ismisleading. The article cited for the Times story is actuallya blog entry for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA)whichstates "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found." That is not the same as “they don’t exist.”

In November Sahar Dimus, our guide on four CFZ Sumatra expeditions, died of liver failure leaving a widow Lucy and four Children. On the 2nd November, Dezyama D. Sangma, wife of our friend and colleague Dipu Marak, our collaborator on the 2010 Indian expedition died, leaving her grieving husband and two small children.
