WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

HELEN AND BETH'S PIGEON RESCUE

The other night Helen rescued a pigeon that a young person of uncertain parentage had shot with an air gun. Despite being covered in blood she had to chase it across several gardens before managing to catch it.

The lucky bird is now recuperating with Beth and Hartland Wildlife Rescue.

BETH IN THE NEWS AGAIN

Millie the fox had an unfortunate start in life - the vixen was born profoundly deaf, making life in the wild in north Devon particularly hard. Then she was injured while being chased by a group of boys.

Fortunately for Millie, she was rescued and now lives at Hartland Wildlife Rescue Centre run by Bethany Tyler-King, who is also profoundly deaf. The pair have found a way of communicating, using a sign language system all of their own.

Bethany says their shared deafness has created a special bond between them. "I think I have more empathy and understanding for her," said Bethany. "She'll paw me if she wants food, and when I want her attention I'll come up to her and do hand signals." Millie has made herself very much at home at the centre, where she has become best friends with Angel the cat.

BETH TYLER-KING WRITES...

Just wanted to let you all know that a wonderful lady called Mandy Found has now opened a charity shop in Bideford on behalf of my little sanctuary Hartland Wildlife Rescue! It opens tomorrow (Monday 14th June). Understandably, I cannot thank Mandy enough for taking it upon herself to help my little critters here! It is an absolute Godsend for me. Mandy has worked so hard for weeks getting it all off the ground and a friend of mine, John Dunn, is painting the sign that will go above the shop. The Storehouse Project run by Tina and Joe Buckingham of Pitt Street have donated rails and shelving.

It's in Cooper Street, next door to Crabby Dicks nightclub and is off Mill street where Somerfield, Wildens etc are.

Please do pop in and have a look around if you are ever passing! Take Care ! xxxxx

BETH AND MILLIE ON TV

Dear Friends & Relatives,

Just in case any of you are interested and want to see me behaving like a total dork, then I will be on TV this Wednesday, 3rd March at 1pm on BBC2! Programme called See Hear.

The programme features myself and Millie, and my other animals. At one stage Millie and I were filmed playing and I am bunched up on the floor with her leaping all over me and tugging my hair (hence me looking like a total dork) so whether this bit will be shown or not...! Anyway if you do manage to watch the programme please do let me know what you think! Am sharing the episode with England Rugby team as well.

Love Beth xxxx

A SLICE OF LIFE AT HARTLAND WILDLIFE RESCUE

People at the last Weird Weekend will have noticed a bric-a-brac stall incongrously situated between a bookstall and a specialisr publisher.

Behind the stall you would have seen a pretty young lady called Beth, and on the sunday she was joined by two newborn kittens which were - I think - a bigger draw to Weird Weekenders of all ages than anyone except possibly Ronan.

Her name is Beth Tyler-King and for years she has been involved in Wildlife Rescue, first in Bristol, and now in Hartland. She has become a good friend of the CFZ, and like all our friends she has been persuaded to write for the bloggo...

She writes regularly to us giving us information about the animals she has, and we help when we can. With her permission I am excerpting a few slices fropm recent letters to give you a brief insight into her extraordinary, but rewarding, life..

Had a mad day yesterday! Picked up four animals, two at two vets each. A duck, a hedgehog, a baby crow and a jackdaw. The baby crow has rickets, but its so sweet and funny! He has a tantrum when you tried to feed him and spits the food everywhere and then hangs upside down off your fingers!!!! Anyway he is doing well and tolerating meal times much better!

The baby hogs are doing well, I have a baby housemartin snuggled up with them, its so sweet and also picked up another jackdaw today too with a bad eye but it doesnt need treatment.

My barn owl that will go to Kaye's is going from strength to strength. The feathers are looking glossy and now and its putting on weight. Another couple of weeks and it should be ready to be released.

The next day she wrote:

I am afraid I lost the little crow. He went downhill vomiting everything up. When I asked my friend Rose who runs animal sanctuary at Holsworthy she said that as he had probably been the last to get any good food from the mum (that explains the rickets) then his body wasnt used to good food, so to go back to basics and put him on a liquid diet, which I did and he was able to swallow liquid better. He was under a heat lamp by this time but next morning I found him dead. such a shame. In this business you are damned if you do and damned if you dont, all you can is your best.

I am at Broad Parkham farm today (Open farm day in devon) and doing a little talk between 12-1pm. taking baby hogs and baby sparrow with me that is very vocal!!!! Also got a little questionnaire for kids that will win a prize for best one, that ll make sure they might listen to me then!!!

FIRST PICTURES OF THE RESCUED CROW

These are the first pictures of the latest rescued crow that we have fostered from Beth Tyler-King at Hartland Wildlife Rescue.

She found it in a lane near Northam. It was fluttering along the ground, very thin, and clearly in distress. It was unable to fly, and Beth has suggested that it is possible that it flew into a power line and sustaine nerve damage.

I don't know about that because I am not an expert in such things, and I

will bow to Beth's superior knowledge in such matters. He is now ensconsed in Ichabod's old aviary where he (unlike Ichabod Grim who was always a fussy eater) is wolfing down large amounts of dogfood.

Richard found a dead slow-worm in the street earlier today and we gave it to him. We are planning to try him on smaller items of roadkill, which seems to be a reasonable idea, and will save the dogfood bill a bit.

THIS WEEK AT HARTLAND WILDLIFE RESCUE

People at the last Weird Weekend will have noticed a bric-a-brac stall incongrously situated between a bookstall and a specialisr publisher.

Behind the stall you would have seen a pretty young lady called Beth, and on the sunday she was joined by two newborn kittens which were - I think - a bigger draw to Weird Weekenders of all ages than anyone except possibly Ronan.

I picked up a very underweight starling last week which unfortunately although I fed it and had it under a heatlamp, died in the night but I get comfort from the fact that it died in the warm with a full tummy and not out in the cold. Picked up a young pigeon yesterday from vets, also very underweight so hand feeding that too. Collected a hedgehog last Thursday from Stibbs Cross that had been attacked by a dog and it is at vets for a couple of days having regular injections as it is not eating very well. I also have since last Thursday taken in a 6-8mth old puppy that I am needing to rehome so if you know of anyone that would be great. It looks like a small bearded collie (Greyfriars Bobby kind of look) but is actually a King Charles spaniel cross. He is veryhouse trained and very trainable, good with cats too.

I gave my 18 year old pony a bath yesterday as she may be going on loan to Kingsland Riding stables in Woolsery. She was on loan to a Riding school for five years before when I lived in Bristol and she adores children (not adults, hates me!!!!)
