On this day in 1888 Richard Wetherill and his brother-in-law discovered the stunning Native American ruins of the Mesa Verde national park in America. In Britain on this day in 1912 Charles Dawson ‘discovered’ Piltdown Man, which was found out to be a hoax years later.
