THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS QUITE PLEASED THAT THE WEEKEND IS UPON US

I really should have learnt by now not to judge proverbial books by their equally proverbial covers. But, like the vast majority of the human race, I haven’t. Back in the 1980s, I was vaguely aware of an Australian pop singer called Rick Springfield. He had a massive hit with a song called Jessie’s girl, which didn’t really impinge onto my radar very much. However, he has a DVD out on Gonzo, so I have always kept an eye on his activities. His records have always been decently produced and well crafted, although that particular brand of AOR has always left me cold. But each time he puts a record out, I check it out, just in case.

 

And bloody hell, I am so glad that I did. He has a new album out. It is called The Snake King and – bloody hell – it is an eye opener!

 

The news has been full of the fact that he recently admitted to having been suicidal, and – in the light of this – I suppose it’s not really surprising that this whole album is about God, death and self-doubt. The record has welcome echoes both of Nick Cave and mid-1960s Bob Dylan, with witty, though mordant, wordplay reminiscent of both. It is a super album, and, by anyone’s standards, the first classic release of 2018. As I said, you cannot judge a book, or a popsinger, by it’s, or his, cover.

* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 58 who - together with a Jack Russell called Archie, an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, and two half grown kittens, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention Archie and the Cats?

GLEN AND COLIN FOR BHM STUDY GROUP

Dear friends,

About 17yrs ago when we started to change the CFZ from being a ‘boys club’ to being a properly codified research organisation, we decided to take a leaf out of the world of entomology. The amateur entomological society, for example, has both a Phasmid Study Group and a Mantid Study Group.

It has always mildly puzzled me how people who are interested in mystery cats, for example, are not necessarily interested in bigfoot or lake monsters, but that is the way of the world, and so we decided to start up special interest study groups of our own. The first two were the Big Cat Study Group and the BHM Study Group.

The BHM Study Group was run for many years by the late Paul Vella, but he was forced to give it up some years ago due to his declining health, and until now we had not found a replacement.

I am very happy to announce that long term CFZ stalwart Glen Vaudrey is taking over the role. As Glen is particularly interested in BHM in Britain and Europe, we have appointed Colin Schneider, who has many contacts within the US bigfoot community, as his deputy.

We look forward to great things from these two eminent researchers.

WHEN THE GREEN WOODS SCREAM

As many of you will know, the team behind the Centre for Fortean Zoology and Gonzo Weekly Magazine are also responsible for various other projects. These include a non-profit community record company called Wyrd, which specialises in putting out limited editions of peculiar little records that nobody else would be likely to touch with a metaphorical barge pole. And here we have news of the latest release!

After years of rumours, Xtul are finally releasing their first hardcopy EP. It is pretty much what you would expect from a band consisting of peculiar mutants, who live in a redoubt deep in the dank woodlands of North Cornwall. In The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis said that one should never trust something that used to be human, but isn’t now.

As Xtul consists of a man in a wheelchair with the head of an elephant, a little girl with goat’s legs and the statuesque woman with the face of a skull, (and most definitely does NOT include Jon Downes, although he will admit to having produced it and having played guitar on a couple of tracks) you probably shouldn’t trust this lot.
