WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

Inventor creates flying ostrich

A Dutch inventor says he's created the world's first flying ostrich - by attaching propellors to a stuffed bird. Bart Jenson has spent the last 12 months working on his OstrichCopter, reports Metro. "I thought it was really funny to make fly a bird that can't. It's quite a challenge to get the thing flying," he said.
He previously made headlines when he turned his beloved dead cat Orville into a helicopter after it was tragically run over by a car. For his latest project, Mr Jenson got a dead ostrich from a farm and took it to a taxidermist to have it skinned and tanned. He and and his sidekick, technical engineer Arjen Beltman, then set about fitting it with engines and propellers. Their hard work paid off when they recently took the remote-controlled flying ostrich for a successful test flight.

A STRANGE LETTER

I received the following email in my inbox yesterday. It is posted exactly as received....

Jon:

Nice vid on Anomaly TV -- I'm in Minnesota -- straight north of Texas or nearly. We have thousands of wolves here in northern Minnesota apparently -- as the Latinos migrate north maybe the wolves are migrating south? Not sure but the Paddlefish on the Mississippi and the river sharks -- both using ampullae of Lorenzi -- could have switched places as well.

Maybe there is some strange hybrid -- since the wolf-dog-coyote mix is not out of the question. Isn't there some small wolf in Mexico?

Blue -- why? Serotonin on the spectrograph is blue btw -- which tells you why Krishna is blue. My guess is some sort of freak toxic mutant as Texas is very polluted as per Bush policy.

Chameleons are blue -- and the reptilian humans could have reptilian dogs. All the best,

THIS HAS GOT TO BE A F.O.A.F TALE

This is totally off topic but it is such a peculiar news story that I felt that we had to comment upon it. Surely this cannot be true? This has to be some kind of legend or folktale because if not, give me an address or telephone number. Oliver and I will have liposuction and end the CFZ financial crisis at a stroke.

'Fat for cosmetics' murder suspects arrested in Peru. Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe. The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before extracting their fat to sell it for $15,000 (£9,000) a litre.

Other suspected gang members, including two Italian nationals, remain at
large. Read On

THIS IS GOING TO BE A SLIGHTLY STRANGE WEEK

When is a week at the CFZ not a slightly strange week? It's all change this week because Graham is in the Isle of Man visiting his Mama, and - totally coincidentally - we have Lizzy here for a week starting this evening. Add to that computer problems, family problems, an overgown hawthorn tree at the back of the museum needing urgent surgery and the fact that now there are no leaves on the trees, Biggles can see out of the garden and (for the first time in months) has resumed his bids for freedom, and one can see that there is never a dull moment here at the world's biggest bloody madhouse.

So service will be erratic for the next few days, but like a fortean analogue of the Pony Express, the bloggos always come through.

MUIRHEAD'S INVOCATORY POWERS: Gull Strangeness, and Great Sadness

Something that I have noticed over the past fifteen years of being a Fortean publisher and writer is that (without trying to paraphrase Richard Hell and the Voidoids too badly) weird stuff comes in spates. This has been documented elsewhere, and such occurrences are often known as `Flaps`. However, something else that I have noticed is that for some reason completely unknown to me the mere creative act of writing an article about a certain subject can appear to provoke or perhaps invoke similar happenings across the globe.

Yesterday we published part one of a bloggopost by our old pal Richard Muirhead called Birds Behaving Badly - Beware!

No sooner had we done so but stories echoing two of the most peculiar aspects of Richard's article came into my email inbox:

Magpie funerals

Giant seagull appears behind newsreader

Coincidence? Probably not. Its all part of The Case. We are posting part two this morning and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Forests of Mystery

Twice a day I do the bloggo postings, and part of my routine is to post details of these updates on Usenet and Facebook. Today, on the `Cryptozoology` page on Facebook, I found the following posting:

Hi everyone! My name is Dewey Lansing and there's been some odd happenings at the Cascade Forest Research Center in Tillamook, Oregon (where I work) that I think it falls into the cryptozoology catagory. For more information please visit my website at http://www.forestsofmystery.com/

I am always on the lookout for new stories, so I followed the link and was highly impressed by what I found. I don't believe a word of it, but it is massively entertaining. The quality of the filming and the scope of the various interlinked websites imply that this is a promo for a TV Show or movcie rather than just a hoax, but it is incredibly well done and I want to know what happens next.

Check it out....

GUEST BLOGGER ALAN FRISWELL: DAGENHAM: SERIAL KILLER’S PARADISE?

Alan first came to my notice when he turned up at our stall at last November's Unconvention. He was clutching a box that had once held a plastic Christmas Tree. He thrust it at me, and said "Here's your mermaid".

I vaguely remembered Richard F having said that one of his mates had offered to make us a feegee mermaid, but I had forgotten all about it. Sad to say, so many people offer to do stuff for us, and then fail to deliver, that I had got into the habit of treating all such offers cum grano salis, but the advent of Alan shows that I should not be such a cynical old sod. Now he has become a guest blogger..

Now this little tale is certainly off-topic as far as mysterious zoology goes, but then several other blogs have also veered somewhat from the cryptozoological straight-and-narrow, so to speak, and I’m pretty sure that the events that I’m about to relate do have some Fortean interest at least, so pin your ears back and prepare to hear a rather gruesome, not to mention disturbing story….

About six years ago, I went out one evening to meet some friends at one of my local pubs. They knew that I had been working on a horror movie project, and asked me to bring some props along with me, so I found an old plastic bag from Tesco (it draws less attention) and filled it with a severed, decomposing head--always a sure-fire hit at parties--two rotting human arms and a small withered mummified creature. I’m fairly well-known in my neck of the woods (East London) for turning up at local hostelries with assorted monsters and dead bodies which I will usually sit on a bar stool. The best audience for this, not surprisingly, was the late-lamented Goth pub The Intrepid Fox in Wardour St in Soho in London’s West End, and for a couple of years I had three of my zombies sitting behind the bar, leering out from between the beer pumps. The landlord said that they were his best customers, which is perhaps the reason why the pub closed down…

So there I was, with my Tesco bag full of body parts, which seemed to go down well with the local inmates, most of whom were so drunk that they didn’t know what they were looking at anyway, and I have to admit, that what with it being something of a social occasion, I had myself partaken of what might be euphemistically described as “a few sherbets”, so consequently my powers of cognisance and deliberation may have been somewhat alleviated by the time I called it a night, and repaired to my local Chinese takeaway for the obligatory prawn balls, and a sweet and sour--or whatever.

The next morning, I realised that firstly, I was labouring under the weight of a hangover that felt like my head had been stuffed into a tin drum along with a small thermo-nuclear device, and second, that my Tesco bag had inexplicably gone missing. Despite my delicate physical state I managed to recall enough of the previous night through the mists of alcoholic oblivion to remember placing the bag on the floor of the takeaway. In great relief I pulled myself out of my deathbed, and painfully dragged myself down there. To my even greater relief, the chap behind the counter recognised me, and gave me a cheery wave over a large plate of Peking duck.

“Hello!” I said. “I left a bag here last night. Silly me!”

“Yes, yes,” he said, “you leave it on floor.”

Yep, that sounds about right. Can I have it please?”

“Oh no,” he said, “we throw it outside by bus stop.”

“WHAT?” I replied. “Why on earth did you do that?”

“We look inside and find murdered dead people. We scared, we no like.. We get rid of it.”

I was momentarily speechless, although if I had been able to find the words, I am certain that the great majority of them would have begun with “F”. I went out to the bus stop, but the ‘murder victim’ was long gone. Initially, I was understandably angry that these idiots had chucked my work away, but even worse, the fact dawned on me that they had found what were ostensibly human remains--at least as far as they were concerned--and rather than phone the police, had disposed of the evidence. I could hardly sue a provincial Chinese takeaway for loss of earnings, and in all conscience I had to accept partial responsibility for being drunk in charge of decomposing corpses--kind of, so I was forced to chalk it up to experience. I’ve often wondered what happened to those props--whether they turned up on Ebay, or have been kept in a cupboard somewhere by some loon who thinks they’re the real thing…

In the years since, I’ve often visualised this nightmare scenario of lunatic serial killers up and down the country, bumping people off right, left and centre, then dumping the remains in this shop, only to have them conveniently disposed of by the nutcases inside.

So if there are any budding Hannibal Lecters out there, who find themselves in possession of some inconvenient heads, torsos, and assorted human body parts, I suggest that you immediately get yourself down to Dagenham, where I could direct you towards a very accommodating Chinese takeaway……..
