WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

CRYTPTOLINK: “White Bigfoot”! Yeti Shows Up in Maine

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

By Edwin Duesiester (my own drawing from 1979)
By Edwin Duesiester
LITCHFIELD, Maine — Severe ice and snow storms caused a power outage Tuesday affecting more than half a million people living in the United States and Canada. Hundreds were left fighting the cold and darkness with blankets, fireplaces and candles.
But according to some people there is something hiding in the snow. A man in Litchfield, a small community located in Maine, claimed he saw a strange beast in the snow that terrorized him and his dog.
“It ain’t like it used to be, this cold has become tough man…” said M. P., a single man working in construction. “The ice, the snow, yeah we used to get these before, but this is way too sudden. It has caught us by surprise, damn, it sure has.”
M.P. told Cryptozoology News he was outside his house taking the dog for a fast walk, when his furry friend “went nuts”. It was then that they had an encounter with what the man calls “a white bigfoot.”
Bigfoot Maine“I reckon there wasn’t much visibility, as you can imagine with this amount of snow. But I ain’t blind, man, I know what I saw, and my dog got out of control, barking at it, he never barks this much, he was pulling me like I’ve never seen him do before. When I first noticed it I thought it was a bear or something, but that was something else. It moved fast and like a human. It was fat, huge, and it had white long hair everywhere. Looked like a white bigfoot or something, no kidding. Look I don’t believe there are bigfoots or anything here, or in America or anywhere the world, for that matter, but either that was some guy in a costume or I will have to change my mind about the whole bigfoot deal. Now, who would be willing to dress up like this in this foul weather and get run over by a car or something? No sir, that must have been some animal, only I don’t know what kind of animal it was.”

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN SKIPS

The Gonzo Daily - New Year's Eve

I spent a very enjoyable but late night recording with Mike Davis until what Frank Sinatra called 'the wee small hours', (a term which has taken on entirely new vistas for me since I became a diabetic). We recorded two songs: a jolly piece of power pop and something that sounds like the Incredible String Band on which I play guitar, banjo, recorder and tambourine and there are no electronics whatsoever. I have been putting it off all month, but now I absolutely HAVE to sit down and write my annual report. So no dozing in front of the fire for Jonathan this afternoon.

The Bigfoot saga has been around a long time…and there are hundreds of accounts to back it up. I have posted 3 newspaper reports describing Bigfoot from yesteryear:
    Savage Attempts to Kidnap Women
McNairy County, Tennessee – April 13, 1871 — “We learn that between Sobby and Crainsville on what is called Piney, in McNairy County, TN a strange and frightful savage has been observed for several weeks.
He is said to be seven feet high and possessed of great muscular power. His eyes are unusually large and fiery red; his hair hangs in a tangle and matted mass below his waist, and his beard reaches below his middle. His entire body is covered with hair and his whole aspect is most frightful. He shuns the sight of them but approaches with wild and horrid screams of delight every woman who is unaccompanied by a man.

This is the meat and bones of the Interview I did with Norm Glasser. Of course, later we determined it was a hoax with the help of Adam Bird. This is a look into the mind of a well rehearsed hoaxer. I may or may not release the entire interview but this will give you an idea of how much thought was put into this.

    TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS

    The Gonzo Daily - Monday

I have once again been recording with Mike Davis, and another two songs are pretty well there. One of them is still awaiting some vocals from Liz but with a little luck and a fair wind the other will be up on YouTube later today. I have several musical projects on the go at the moment, which considering my rapidly increasing deafness is mildly ironic, and I think that this forthcoming year will be when I finally start my long considered project of a musical equivalent of CFZ Press. Later today I am interviewing the massively talented Don Falcone from Spirits Burning, and sometime this week (but for the life of me I can't remember when) I am interviewing Mark Murdock. And tomorrow Max arrives for the ring in the new ring out the old bit. Sometime before then I have to write my CFZ Annual Report for 2013. Who said this was a relaxed time of year?

On this day in 2006 Saddam Hussain was executed. Undoubtedly the world can do without a dictator who embezzled most of his country's finances to build a solid gold house, gassed any troublemakers and tortured his enemies by feeding them into a wood chipper alive, but the war that ousted him was illegal, based on lies and probably resulted in more terrorist-related deaths and injuries than Saddam could have dreamt of in his wet dreams.

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who contributed to my blog this year and to Shawn Evidence for helping me out when I first got started blogging.

2013 had it's ups and downs, twists and turns, but overall there were some good things that happened in the Bigfoot world.

I started the blog in February and here are some of the popular posts of the year.

    FEBRUARY: Rick Dyer & Matilda

With the backing of Facebook Find Bigfoot, Rick Dyer solidifies his hoax and garners a decent-sized following. This was also a big month for his outspoken critics, including this blog. We focused a lot of our attention on exposing Tricky Dick. You can find more posts on this in the Hoax label of the blog.

RICK DYER GOES ON RECORD ABOUT ALL THE BIGFOOT SCAMS. In this show that took place in 2010 he talks about how he doesn't believe in Bigfoot and that it's all a big scam.

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

"Bigfoot are naturally going to be seen in remote places," state Bigfoot experts Burnette and Riggs (In the Big Thicket) to open this examination and potential explanation for the existence of the legendary creature.

The duo go on to relate a number of eyewitness accounts, as well as their own experiences, before bringing in other experts to corroborate their hypotheses and aid in documenting the elusive beast, leaving with only some footprints to show for their efforts. Skeptical readers will find the book's first half to be informative but predictable.

CONFUSION REIGNS WHERE THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN SITS

    The Gonzo Daily - Saturday

The forthcoming year is the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War and I wonder how the media are going to deal with it. I don't mean the documentaries, the political analyses and the special tie-in book from Downton Abbey, but the entertainment business and more particularly, the music business. Ever since 1984, when everyone went Orwellian at least once, I have been expecting another big cash-in year. OK it happened in 1999 for the millenium, but I was expecting everyone to embrace fictional space travel, or at least make documentaries about Arthur C, Clark in 2001 and do a remake of Raise the Titanic in 2012, but the first didn't happen at all and the second was somewhat muted. Both my grandfathers fought in the First World War: one in the Royal Flying Corps and the other in the Royal Horse Artillery. The latter was seriously injured and finally died of his condition in 1954. One of my grandmothers was a Land Girl, and the other a schoolgirl who saw Zeppelins fly overhead, and so my childhood was immersed quite strongly in family memories of the conflict.

So what's going to happen? In 2014 will we be too immersed in our own sense of self importance or preoccupied with our own problems to care about what happened 100 years before? Or will Simon Cowell present a Salute to Passchendaele and The Spice Girls reform again to sing 'Keep the Home Fires burning' while an inner city grime artist will name herself Dolly Gray (getting the war completely wrong) to present an urban version of Eric Bogle's elegiac 'The Green Fields of France.' Or will no-one care, and will "time, like an ever rolling stream" have indeed borne "all its sons away"? Ask me again in another 12 months.

    LIZ BITAKARAMIRE FEELS VICTIMIZED

I can only assume this is part of some dog-dementia-induced paranoia but Pal has developed a real mistrust of me with his food over the last few months as he's got older and more infirm.

Tonight really took the biscuit, though. I came with a big piece of leftover beef for him, put it in his dish and sat down. Moments later he had it in his mouth and was frantically combing the whole of Mum's living room looking for a place to hide it, and crying each time a spot he investigated turned out to be unsuitable!

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN KEEPS AN EYE ON PRUDENCE

    The Gonzo Daily - Friday
Regular readers will remember that yesterday Prudence the dog who looks like a pygmy hippo superficially injured herself, and spread trails of gore across the house. Yesterday continued to be very peculiar, especially for Prudence. Being a well brought up young lady all she wanted to do was to have a thorough wash and clean herself, but despite being covered in blood, we were afraid that if she did she would re-open the wound and start it bleeding again. So she had to have a massive plastic cone on her collar, which made her look like a fat Elizabethan lady wearing a ruff. She disapproved of this mightily, and not being the most agile of creatures at the best of times, blundered about the house knocking everything over. In the midst of all of this we had a visit (a very welcome visit, may I stress) from the delightfully nutty Kara Wadham, and the whole day became very surreal. What topped it off was that because of the collar on her neck Pru would not have been able to get onto the bed so in order not to cause her more distress than ever we both slept downstairs in the sitting room with her. It was a surprisingly comfortable night until I was woken by a small black cat trying to push her rectum into my right eye. In the midst of all of this madness, I finished the new Frederick Forsyth novel, which I think is his best since Icon in 1995. And finally, lots of love to Lily Wadham who went back into hospital this morning with tonsillitis related tomfoolery....
