WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman.The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS AFFLICTED

The Gonzo Daily - Saturday
Yesterday was the most unpleasant day in the Capitalist Year. Yes, boys and girls, it was Black Friday. Even though the British don't celebrate Thanksgiving, we have started to celebrate the day after, when unbridled Consumerism hits the streets. As Loren Coleman so rightly says on his blog: "...in recent years, it has become capitalism's version of "Devil's Night," chiefly associated with the serious vandalism and arson seen in Detroit, Michigan from the 1970s to the 1990s. Violence has been frequent news byproduct of reports on Black Fridays, since 2006, and the media appears to be enjoying detailing every fight, shooting, or near riots on Black Fridays". Horribly, yesterday I had emails from members of the public wanting to know whether I was going to be doing massive savings on purchases of the Journal of Cryptozoology for Black Friday. My reply was in the negative.
I am not a renunciate - I like to have money in my pocket, but none of the things I do are motivated by money, and I find a culture where (as Dave McMann said, commenting on Loren's post that people "must shop for tat they don't need or can't afford as they have been brainwashed by he media to do so" totally abhorrent. There is nothing wrong with making money, but there is everything wrong with harrassing, bullying or manipulating people so that one can do so.
The new issue of Gonzo Weekly is out, and boy is it a corker. We have an interview with the lovely Judy Dyble about her recent appearance on an EP by Thee Faction, who make the claim that they are bringing down the government one song at a time which sounds good to me, especially as I have been doing something similar. We also have an interview with John Higgs about chaos, magick, and the band who burned a million quid. Listen to it and enter the surrealchemical world of the KLF. We also have Steve Ignorant's Slice of Life's recent London show in pictures, Doug Harr reviewing the new Jethro Rull biography, Jefferson Starship, Clearlight and tons more. Add to this news, reviews, interviews, idiosyncratic opinion pieces and that little bit of politics...and its all ABSOLUTELY FREE.

CRYPTOLINK: Puerto Rican Bigfoot

Recently at Mysterious Universe, Nick Redfern wrote about what he has learned of the oft-neglected legends of a hirsute hominid roaming the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, which is to say not much. To be fair, there isn't much on this strange and elusive creature. Fortunately, I spent several years there talking to locals and researching the island's many tales and can give you what little more I have learned on the topic.
Comecogollos (roughly translated as one who eats the hearts of edible plants) is the term applied to the fabled bipedal primates similar to Bigfoot that are known to destroy guinea (a small, sweet type of banana) crops by devouring the top portion of the tree - hence the name.

Ironically, however, witnesses say that the creature is after the sap found in the trunk and not the guineas themselves. Witnesses have described this creature as hirsute, short, and bipedal with a quick step. It has been witnessed in areas of increased UFO activities such as the El Yunque National Rainforest.

The week seems to go by incredibly fast as I get older. I can't believe that it is Friday already. No, that is a stupid thing to say - of course I believe that it is Friday, but it seems to come round ever so fast these days. Last night was pleasant; we had a visit from two newcomers to the village who I have a sneaking suspicion I shall be collaborating with on both CFZ stuff and music stuff. It is grey and wet outside, and it is a lovely feeling that in about four weeks the nights will start to get shorter again.

    CRYPTOLINK: Searching for a monster

    LAKE CITY, Minn. (KTTC) -- Most of us have probably heard of the Loch Ness Monster. Legend has it that we have one of those swimming in the depths of Lake Pepin right here at home-- and two national TV shows sent crews to Lake City this week to tell the story.

    The Travel and Discovery Channels have gotten word of a monster we call Pepie and now Lake City will be featured nationally for it. NewsCenter's Jonathan Kegges and photographer Dymanh Chhoun followed the Travel Channel crew as they took to Lake Pepin by boat.

    The story was passed down from generation to generation by Native Americans

    THE GONZO BLOG DOO DAH MAN HAS...............

    I had a doctor's appointment mid morning so, although I did some bloggystuff before I went, I am doing the vast majority of it now. Graham and I were on TV last night, and although I haven't seen it yet (and quite possibly won't bother) apparently it was OK. Weirdly, as I was leaving the consulting room and limping down the corridor a pretty young nurse came rushing up to me and gasped "Oooh you were on TV last night, this is so exciting!" I muttered something appropriate and signed the proffered NHS appointment pad with my name and a scribbled picture of a chicken (which probably confused her). In these decadent days, Television is the new God, and anyone who appears on TV (even for ten minutes talking about 'The Great Devon Mystery' of 1851, is fleetingly endowed with this neodivinity. I really find it most disturbing. But it is only a month until Christmas and I always find myself becoming more elderly and cantankerous as the old year shambles to a halt. Bah! PS If anyone wants to see it, it is on the ITV version of iPlayer, and it is 'Mystery Map Episode 2'. If anyone can actually bootleg it for me, I would be rather pleased...

    CRYPTOLINK: Interview With Jonathan Brown, The Person Who Filmed This Thermal Footage In Washington

    Over the weekend at the Sasquatch Summit and Washington, Olympic Project founder Derek Randles revealed one of the most impressive thermal footage of Bigfoot ever. Randles had already set out to do a thorough investigation of the location and from what we're hearing, more evidence will be made public as soon as they are ready. We contacted Jonathan Brown, the person who contacted the Olympic Project after filming a massive sasquatch observing him and his brother from 117 ft away. Here's our conversation with Jonathan about the footage and the on going investigation:

    Shawn Evidence: Hi Jonathan. Really impressive footage. When did you film it?

    Jonathan Brown: Thank you. It was taken 3-4 weeks ago.

    Shawn Evidence: How many people were with you that day, if you don't mind me asking?

    Jonathan Brown: During the picture and the video, my brother Joel Brown. My wife was at the site not long before.

    THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN IS IRRITABLE TODAY

    Last nitght I couldn't sleep, so Captain Frunobulax curled up on my lap and we read Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's absolutely sweinspiring The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier. Strangely, I had been talking to Richard Freeman earlier in the day, and he was vehement about how pretentious and unreadable it was. I must have a taste for the pretentious, however, (which doesn't surprise me overly, and I doubt will surprise anyone else very much) because I enjoyed every minute of it, and despite the fact that I pored over the pages, I am certain that I missed a few cultural references, which would be easy to do: This book references everything from W. Somerset Maugham's caricature of Aleister Crowley,  to Viz, and from the Billy Bunter stories to Bulldog Drummond. It is viciously funny, presenting a Gloriously Surreal (GS) alternative history of about 60 years in the life of our poor beleaguered nation. Totally essential.
    It is funny how my literary journey of the past few months has all been sparked by reading John Higgs' biography of the KLF. That lead me on to reading 'Principia Discordia' and then 'Illuminatus!', which led me off onto a Robert Anton Wilson trip for a while. Then as a direct result of all this I bought an excellent new biography of Alan Moore, and I am now working my way through bits of Alan Moore that I had previously overlooked. And he certainly DOES know the score, perhaps more than I or anyone else had ever realised. So we are back to Defcon 1. What a surprise!

Honest guv! *  Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cat?

    FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

    In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

    TODAY'S BIG CAT ROUND UP



    The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. 

     There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. 

     The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why, sometimes, you will read stories here which appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology, but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.
