WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES: A strange fish in Macclesfield Canal

It`s always pleasant to be able to report a cryptozoology or Fortean story from  my home town of Macclesfield. You may well quote the sceptics comment to Jesus “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” or “can anything of Fortean worth come out of Macclesfield?” Well, obviously, yes,as in the mystery black helicopters scare of the 1970s, and wallabies near by etc.

So the Macclesfield Express of June 22nd 2016 contained a letter from R.W. Hughes of Congleton under the headline CANAL FIND WAS A GIANT (FISH – word missing )

Recently my wife and I were travelling along the Macclesfield canal on our narrowboat `Aurthora Celtic Prince.` At bridge 64 near Macclesfield I noticed a massive dead fish in the water which I managed to pull to the bank, and my wife Susan took a photograph which I enclose ( paper contains the photo which shows a brown fish with a hint of orange – R).

Not being an angler I don`t know what breed of fish this is, but I am sure some of your readers can enlighten me. The size of the fish was 24 inches by 8 inches wide, weight 26lb. This monster had been in the water for some time as it was beginning to decompose, I would be interested to also know what age a fish like this could reach. As an observation, from Bosley locks until Marple junction there is (sic) over 20 miles of canal without locks, a vast length of water capable of supporting a fish of this size*.

I thought this may be of interest to your readers.

RW Hughes

* I happen to know the Macclesfield Canal supports quite large crayfish. I asked for more information on the Macclesfield Express Facebook page but got no replies.

ANDREW MAY: Words from the Wild Frontier

News and stories from the remoter fringes of the CFZ blogosphere...

From CFZ-USA:

SAVE THE HENS

My name is Lucy and I’m 14. When I started a petition earlier this year asking Tesco to stop selling eggs from caged hens I never imagined that 280,000 people would sign it or that I would get a face to face meeting with Tesco's Head of Agriculture. But it all really happened and now the supermarket giant has pledged to stop selling eggs from caged hens!
This is an incredible moment and I can’t thank everyone that backed me enough. Now with this victory secured, I believe we can get all UK supermarkets to stop selling eggs from caged hens:
Morrisons and Asda, still intend to sell caged eggs without any obvious intent to change. So I have started a new petition calling for Asda and Morrisons to stop selling eggs from caged hens. Please join me.
Caged eggs come from hens that spend 72 weeks cramped in restrictive cages, unable to spread their wings or experience the outside world. After this time, many of the hens are barely feathered and close to death. No animal deserves to live like this.
The fact that Tesco, the biggest supermarket in Britain, has decided to stop selling caged hens’ eggs proves that no matter how big the company, the prospect of a free-range future is not impossible.
The power to make this change is in our hands, now it is clear that supermarkets really do listen to public pressure I know we can make this change happen again.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?

Well, everything, actually!

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN SINGS QUIETLY IN A CORNER

The Gonzo Daily - Tuesday

Yesterday I wrote "What a weird year this is turning out to be". But yesterday took the biscuit. The car packed up (fixed for a tenner this afternoon but hairy while it lasted), I got bitten by a snake (the Mexican black kingsnake in the sitting room) and someone very dear to me who has been unable to drive for health reasons got her driving license back. Add to that two teenage girls giggling maniacally on my sofa, and you will see it was a very weird day. And I wasn't even drinking.

And now I am on the want again. Ticket sales for this year's Weird Weekend are the slowest ever. I strongly suspect that it is because of the financial insecurity that so many people are feeling at the moment, but I hope that it will turn itself around in the next four weeks. This year's Weird Weekend featuring our very own Steve Ignorant, sponsored by our very own Erik Norlander, compèred by me and the return of  Nuneaton's Mr Entertainment, Barry Tadcaster with his pal Orang Pendek, and featuring a whole cornucopia of high strangeness and cerebral silliness. It would make me very happy if I could sell some more tickets..

If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. * The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.co.uk

* We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 56 who - together with an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, and two small kittens, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the infantile orange cat, and the adventurous kittens?
