Enormous 20-stone catfish caught with fishing rod in Italy after 40-minute boat battle 

 Dino Ferrari told GrindTV that he and his brother, Dario, lured it in with artificial bait and then battled the giant fish from their small boat for 40 minutes on Thursday.

The wels catfish, which was set free, could be one of the largest ever caught.

After staying in the water to weigh and measure the specimen, which is one of the largest ever caught, they released it back into the river to swim another day.

The electricity supply around here has been stable, the last 24 hours... what a surprise!  Actually, what did surprise me the other day was to find out that power cuts aren't anything to do with the regional electricity company. These days, all they do is read the meter and charge you for what you've used, and they have no other means of even finding out who's receiving power and who isn't. No, it's the distribution network that is in charge of the supply side of things.

So it's the same set-up as with the UK's railway 'system' then. Fragmented.

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. 

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. 

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

NEWS FROM NOWHERE - Thursday

ON THIS DAY IN 1955 - Billboard magazine reported that the 45 rpm single was outselling the 'wax' 78 rpm format for the first time.

That's a bit of a technological landmark... but it's funny to think that today's computer disk drives aren't so very different to the 78 rpm records. They are both random access spinning disks.
