WELCOME TO THE CFZ BLOG NETWORK: COME AND JOIN THE FUN

Half a century ago, Belgian Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans first codified cryptozoology in his book On the Track of Unknown Animals.

The Centre for Fortean Zoology (CFZ) are still on the track, and have been since 1992. But as if chasing unknown animals wasn't enough, we are involved in education, conservation, and good old-fashioned natural history! We already have three journals, the largest cryptozoological publishing house in the world, CFZtv, and the largest cryptozoological conference in the English-speaking world, but in January 2009 someone suggested that we started a daily online magazine! The CFZ bloggo is a collaborative effort by a coalition of members, friends, and supporters of the CFZ, and covers all the subjects with which we deal, with a smattering of music, high strangeness and surreal humour to make up the mix.

It is edited by CFZ Director Jon Downes, and subbed by the lovely Lizzy Bitakara'mire (formerly Clancy), scourge of improper syntax. The daily newsblog is edited by Corinna Downes, head administratrix of the CFZ, and the indexing is done by Lee Canty and Kathy Imbriani. There is regular news from the CFZ Mystery Cat study group, and regular fortean bird news from 'The Watcher of the Skies'. Regular bloggers include Dr Karl Shuker, Dale Drinnon, Richard Muirhead and Richard Freeman. The CFZ bloggo is updated daily, and there's nothing quite like it anywhere else. Come and join us...

CRYPTOLINK: The Carcass Problem (Part 1 Appendix)

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting (sometimes for the wrong reasons), usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

Whilst compiling the list of alleged Nessie carcasses, this one completely escaped my mind. Richard Carter was an active monster hunter back in the 1990s and found this skull on the shores of Loch Ness which then went through various hands before it seems ending up in a Yorkshire landfill site. Richard Carter no longer is on the Loch Ness scene, but in a recent exchange of messages with me, he still believes there is something unusual in the loch and is drawn to the Giant Eel theory.

It is probably a cat, and I recall F. W. Holiday talking about finding a wildcat carcass during his shoreline searches. But it could be something else (though not necessarily mysterious) and does show that things are found around the loch, albeit not of a Nessie nature. It is a matter then of figuring out what exactly it is (I contacted Steve Feltham who was of the opinion it was a cat).

The comments below are taken from a website on Scottish Big Cats.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?

Well, everything, actually!

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

NICE ONE, SCOTT :)

In stunning news that not only confirms the existence of the long sought-after Nessie but also the existence of life on other planets, Pharmaceutical giant Dopemol announced today that they had isolated a DNA sequence from a photograph using advanced laser scanning technology that confirmed that the so-called Loch Ness Monster was in fact a Giant Squid (Gigantoteuthis mobiggius) from Jupiter’s moon Europa.
In consultation with Astrophysicist Fuller Bolshetikov, it was deduced that the Nessie DNA was 500 million years old, having traveled through space frozen in a comet ejected from Europa. Photographs from space taken by NASA satellites orbiting Europa have produced images of Nessie-like objects in the oceans of Europa over the last 40 years. With the recently developed DNA Laser Sequencing Image Scanner, a full DNA strand sequence can be quantified from space based on dermal ridges in the image. A chance DNA imaging signature that matched a previous Loch Ness DNA imaging signature was correlated with fossil evidence that indicated that cephalopods native to this planet did not evolve until 300 million years later in the Cetaceous period or Age of Whales.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN SINGS

The Gonzo Daily - Wednesday

And so another day dawns. Graham came back last night. Neither Archie or I were feeling very good yesterday afternoon so we went to bed for a few hours. Whilst I was asleep, not only did Graham return from St Albans, but Prudence also decided she wanted an afternoon sleep, so I woke up amidst a pile of affectionate dogs. I am just waiting for Andrea to turn up with her conceptual secretary hat on, and I will be getting on with a whole slew of things that I really should have done ages ago. Graham is busily editing the Hawkwind film, and it is mother's turn to be surrounded by a pack of affectionate canids. The news about the air pollution scare in today's papers is worrying. The Independent writes: "“Very high” levels of air pollution over the next few days are prompting health concerns for vulnerable and elderly people, as the dust from the Saharan desert and winds combined to create a potentially "toxic" storm." As Olivia is pregnant lives in Norwich, and the pollution is particularly bad in East Anglia, Corinna and I are considerably concerned. We are living in strange times. On a brighter note, but still strange, so far this year there have been at least five sightings of large tortoiseshells, a butterfly which is supposedly extinct in the UK. Some of us believe that it is beginning to make a comeback.

Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html

*  Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who - together with an orange kitten named after a song by Frank Zappa puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange kitten?

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.
