This is Mark Raines. A few weeks before the WW he contacted me on Facebook offering his assistance. He was fantastic at the WW and since then has been piling on sightings reports onto the CFZ Mystery Cat blog, as well as doing other stuff behind the scenes. A passionate animal lover with a houseful of rescued creatures, he also writes rather good poetry.
Welcome to the CFZ family, Mark. It is great to have you aboard.

Cryptozoology on the radio again
On Sunday night’s Morton Through Midnight show the regular
cryptozoology feature Morton’s Mystery Creatures focused on that faery dog of Luskentyre
Beach.
The traditional stories refer to the footprints of the faery
dog being found on Luskentyre Beach and these footprints are not easily
mistaken for normal dog prints as they are far bigger than those that the
largest of true dogs could leave behind in the wet sand. When the author of all
things Hebridean-related, Alasdair Alpin MacGregor, was travelling around the
Western Isles in the 1930s researching his book he eventually found himself on
the sands at Luskentyre. Recalling the traditional tales of the sightings of
the faery dog he proceeded to try and track down a witness and as luck would
have it his path soon crossed that of a young man who was herding some cows.
Being the investigative bloke that he was Alasdair asked the young man if he
had ever heard tales of the faery dog that was said to leave its prints up on
the beach. Much to his surprise the young man confirmed that not only had he
heard of the tale of the faery dog but that he himself had come across a set of
the large canine prints on that lonely beach. He went on to tell Alasdair that
while he had never seen anything other than the paw prints he did know of a
number of people on Harris whose encounters with the animal had not just been
restricted to paw prints but who had both heard and on some occasions actually
seen the faery dog. The young cowherd would proceed to show his companion
the site where he had come across the footprints in the damp sand and as
Alasdair would record in the The ghost
book:
‘This is the bit where myself saw the Cu-Sith’s footprints’
he now told me and in a whisper, lest seal or seabird should overhear. We were
very much alone at the time; and I could not but feel my informant was letting
me into a secret not to be divulged. Perhaps, he was warning me, lest one tarried
too late by this haunted shore land.'
Perhaps the young man suspected the beach itself had a
sentient presence of its own, perhaps recalling the fate of the greedy man and
his boat-load of gold or perhaps he was just recalling the threat the faery dog
held, and as the old tales of this beach confirmed it wasn’t only the third
bark of the Cu sith that you had to fear for it was told that those who stepped
into the tread of those large otherworldly paw prints and followed their course
would be driven to madness. So if you do happen to come across a set of
mysterious paw prints on the beach think twice before stepping in them and if
you choose to, don’t say you haven’t been warned.

TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS ROUNDUP
The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. In September 2012 Emma Osborne decided that the Mystery Cat Study Group really deserved a blog of its own within the CFZ Blog

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES
In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

The Gonzo Daily - Tuesday
Yesterday was not a nice one: I slept
through most of it (thank goodness) but am feeling considerably better this
morning, although I am still parcialmente non functione. It is the full
moon; the word 'LUNATIC' is not just because of an old wives tail. I am also
having email problems. If you have tried to email me this week and had it bounce
back, could you please try contacting me on Facebook, or alternatively try
corinna@cfz.org.uk.
I have no idea what has caused this, but doubt whether it is the full moon as
far as my ISP is concerned. I am waiting for the technical support fellows to
get back to me....

* The Gonzo Daily is a two-way process. If
you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk.
If you are an artist and want to showcase your work or even just say hello, please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk.
Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as
possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is
viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun,
spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining.
See you tomorrow....
* The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-gonzo-news-wots-fit-to-print.html

* Jon Downes, the editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who, together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange), puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon, which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus... did we mention the orange cat?
