My garden is only about a third of an acre, but it needs a lot of work. When my Father was alive he could afford a gardener. One of them - long dead now - was called Mr Shaughnessy so obviously he was known by me and my compadres as "Old Shagnasty". God knows what happened to him, but as he would be well into his nineties now he would probably be less than optimum use. However, this talk is academic because I couldn't afford him anyway. The latest incumbent is a charming young lady called Deanie (Nadine) who WW regulars will remember from last year as the pretty fourteen year old with blue hair. She is now a pretty fifteen year old with very short hair and she has been working very hard in the garden this afternoon. The bed around the top lawn (the circular one) is beginning to look like a flower bed again rather than a uncharted jungle somewhere in Southeast Asia. She was not particularly impressed by the two dead slow worms she found, but that is life.

 

Last night was the first Weird Weekend meeting, and I would like to publically thank the Phillipson family for all they have done, all they are going to do, and all they are doing. My team of previous years has scattered like dust in the wind for a whole string of reasons (some of which I perceive as admirable others less so) and I have a whole new team for this year. I hope that I am wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion that after seventeen years, this will be the final Weird Weekend, at least in its present form.

 

Ticket sales for this year's Weird Weekend are the slowest ever. I strongly suspect that it is because of the financial insecurity that so many people are feeling at the moment, but I hope that it will turn itself around in the next few weeks. This year's Weird Weekend featuring our very own Steve Ignorant, sponsored by our very own Erik Norlander, compèred by me and the return of  Nuneaton's Mr Entertainment, Barry Tadcaster with his pal Orang Pendek, and featuring a whole cornucopia of high strangeness and cerebral silliness. It would make me very happy if I could sell some more tickets..

* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 56 who - together with an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, and two small kittens, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the infantile orange cat, and the adventurous kittens?
