On this day in 1542 Richard Grenville was born. Grenville (who lived in the CFZ's own town of Bideford) helped to defend Britain during the Spanish Armada, but will forever be remembered for his part in the failed new world colony of Roanoke Island aka 'the lost colony'. Mystery surrounds the fate of the final members of the colony, there are theories they integrated themselves into Native American populations, that they were killed by disease or that they attempted to sail back to England. The whole incident inspired the Al Stuart song Lord Grenville:
