I am running a bit late today because of a GP appointment at an unfeasibly early hour followed by a visit to Morrisons, followed by me getting righteously angry about the latest government obfuscation re. the badger cull. The first two worked out OK - I have new diabetic medicine, coleslaw and chickpeas, as well as some rather nice no-sugar jellies. The badger cull is still making me angry and Mark Raines (equally incensed) is coming over to talk about it. My love affair with Eris is continuing apace - I have had a copy of Illuminatus! on my bookshelf for a quarter of a century, but am reading it properly for the first time, and alarming all the animals by laughing so much. I have interviews with Steve Ignorant and Erik Norlander later today, so a fun-filled day is assured.

*  Jon Downes, the editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 54 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and two very small kittens (one of whom is also orange) - puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon, which he shares with various fish and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus... did we mention the orange cat?

On this day in 2004 Christopher Reeve died. Reeve became most famous for his portrayal of Superman in the Superman films, but was perhaps more famous for the determination he showed in trying to regain body functions after he was paralysed from the neck down. Doctors said he would never regain any any functions but by the time of his death he was able to breathe unaided for up to 30 minutes.

CFZ CANADA: 5 Cryptids Cooler than We Have in Canada

It strikes when residents are seeking relief from the brutal summer heat by bedding down on their roofs between midnight and 4 a.m. In May 2001, New Delhi, India became paralyzed with fear when an unidentified black monkey was reportedly terrorizing the population, causing a pregnant women to fall down a staircase and forcing two panicked men to jump off of balconies. All three died, and dozens reported scratches and bites.

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna took the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.
