Well Muirhead`s Mysteries is in its 10th year now and weird cryptozoology stories are still turning up! This one I feature today is not a new discovery, I just found it whilst looking through a box this afternoon. The story is from the Seattle (Washington) Daily Times of August 20th 1920 and I will summarise the main points.
FEATHERED TAIL MARKS TURTLE FREAK REPTILE BROUGHT TO CITY. CONSIDERABLY AGED,HOWEVER IN FACT IT`S SO OLD THAT IT MIGHT BE CLASSED AS PREHISTORIC SPECIMEN.
Now before you get over excited, we are talking about an archaeological relic here, not an actual living specimen,nevertheless I still think it`s interesting.
"Did you ever see a turtle with a tail like a pheasant hen`s?...For A.H.East, a Wenatchee real estate man who is in Seattle today,has in his possession what he regards as more or less tangible evidence that some such freak reptile once lived and flourished in the land of the big red apple (sic - New York?) from which he hails. It is in the form of a tiny cup beautifully carved out of black basalt by some patient prehistoric sculptor...the queer thing about the relic is that the little stone turtle has a fan tail, obviously carved to represent feathers. The question is then,did the sculptor draw on his imagination or were there feathered turtles in his day?
This is the substance of the story really, which I find rather fascinating.
