TADPOLE POND




Fifty years ago, a small pond just down the hillside from Mount Austin playground in Hong Kong was my friends and my secret hideout. To successive generations of children at Mount Austin, Hong Kong, this was "Tadpole Pond". I have been dreaming about it ever since, and had nightmares in which it had been concreted over. My darling godson Greg is in HK this week and pretty well the first thing the dear boy did was to find it for me. I am ridiculously pleased that it is still there, although disappointed that the Health and Safety ethos has reached the far East as well. There were no fences in our day...

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.
