MUIRHEAD`S MYSTERIES: A strange blue light over Devon

I bought off ebay a few months ago a snippet  from a West country newspaper, from the 1930s I think,  about a strange light, possibly a meteor seen over Devon.

Here is the story: BRILLIANT METEOR

DEVON LIFEBOATMEN DECEIVED

A strange light was seen in the sky on Thursday night, and it is believed to be a meteor which exploded before reaching the earth.

People walking in Market Jew Street, Penzance, at about 8.30pm were astonished to see a vivid flash of blue light, appearing over the Market House. It was also seen on the Promenade, where it appeared to drop in a garden. To others who saw it, it appeared to drop at Rosehill.

The phenomenon was seen in other parts of the West-country.

At Appledore the meteor was mistaken for a distress signal in Barnstaple. Consequently the Appledore lifeboat put to sea,and searched the bay for several hours, but could find no trace of a distressed vessel.
