The other day I wrote about the then forthcoming Psychedelic Britannia
documentary on BBC iPlayer, Dave McMann replied:
"That doc' was watchable, but very predictable and mostly dealt with the
mainstream/straight/popular BBC radio friendly bands of that era. Far too much
on Pink Floyd and the Beatles, where were the real bands? It was all the
manufactured crap brainwashing the 'hip young things' into buying clothes from
Granny has a shit or wherever.
It could have been so much better."
I watched it last night, and agreed with Dave. There were a lot of bands,
even mainstream ones, that should have been included. Where was Traffic?
Nirvana? in fact where were the vast majority of bands signed to Island or
Vertigo? And Daevid Allen and Mick Farren were horribly conspicuous by their
absence. And the folk from London were terribly snotty about those from the
provinces.I can think of worse ways of spending a Sunday evening in Autumn
though.

* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an
old hippy of 56 who - together with an infantile orange cat named after a song
by Frank Zappa, and a small kitten totally coincidentally named after one of the
Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted
potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with
various fish, and sometimes a young lady called Jessica. He is ably assisted by
his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law,
and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the
infantile orange cat, and the adventurous kitten?
