Yesterday’s News Today

On this day in 1890 Joseph Merrick died. Merrick was better known as The Elephant Man because of his unusual physical deformities that were, at the time, thought to be unique. Although an intelligent man Merrick was exploited throughout his whole life, first by showmen who would make money by exhibiting him (some did give him a decent cut of the takings and look after him, but these were few and far between) and then by eminent doctors out to make a name for themselves by parading him around naked in lectures which amounted to more or less the same thing as the showmen were doing but with “science”offered up as a fig-leaf of respectability.
