On this day in 1454 Amerigo Vespucci was born. Vespucci proved that the Americas were not, as Columbus had thought, a far flung part of Asia, but a continent unknown to the rest of the world. Because of this North and South America are named in his honour. This is an accolade only ever equalled by Antartico Jones.
