On this day in 1959 Raymond Chandler died. Chandler was one of the greatest writers of hard boiled detective fiction to have ever lived and is most famous for his creation Philip Marlow who stared in The Big Sleep, The High Window (which is my personal favourite) and The Long Goodbye.

There has been a lot of films based on Chandler's work and he wrote screenplays for some, like Double Indemnity and Strangers on a Train, but the most interesting one is The Long Goodbye because it was updated to take place in what was then the modern day. It was a bold move and probably shouldn't have worked but the end result was a fantastic film, here's the trailer:
