New at Frontiers of Anthropology:

New at Cedar and Willow:

Today's Cedar and Willow was one of those things that fought me every inch of the way and never did seem as though it would get done.I finally compromised, changed a few things, shortened the text, and pushed it through.

MEDIEVAL MONSTERS

Dragon, Harley 3244 f.59, c.1250-1300

Numerous documents from antiquity tell of monstrous people living at the edge of the known world. In the first century A.D., Pliny the Elder described extraordinary races of humans living in India and Ethiopia: these included mouthless hairy creatures called Astomi, who had no need of food or drink; men with dog’s heads; and one-legged creatures who could hop at incredible speed and use their giant feet as umbrellas to protect them from the sun.

THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN LIKES TO THINK THAT HE IS IN CONTROL OF HIS DESTINY

Life continues to be confusing. Last night one of Corinna's pet rats was taken ill. Corinna was comforting it when she got bitten on the thumb. The bite wasn't serious but it was painful at the time. Matthew and Emma have arrived to do Weird Weekend stuff, and Prudence is rushing about the house being over affectioinate because she adores Matthew. In the meantime we are awaiting a Danish invasion (if three Danes is an invasion)...

*  The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at  jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...

*  The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link:

* We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!

*  Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 53 who - together with his orange cat (who is currently on sick leave in Staffordshire) and a not very small orange kitten (who isn't) puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish, and sometimes a small Indian frog. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention the orange cats?

FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES (C...

In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out of place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in. So after about six months of regular postings on the main bloggo Corinna has taken the plunge and started a 'Watcher of the Skies' blog of her own as part of the CFZ Bloggo Network.

CRYPTOLINK: Spanish Chupacabra Update

A word about cryptolinks: we are not responsible for the content of cryptolinks, which are merely links to outside articles that we think are interesting, usually posted up without any comment whatsoever from me.

This is a translation from Spanish language sources. I must say that there is a lot of material from the Spanish language press that I do wish to access in my many areas of interest. In this update, Puerto Rican gargoyle from twenty years ago has reappeared which effectively suggests that there is a native population generally avoiding contact. Geographically, it is accessible to Central American comparables.

Otherwise other creatures are out there to sow confusion. These could be even other types of unidentified vampire bats. What is clear is that local reports and local populations do tend to meet the test of conforming evidence. Nocturnal predators are showing up globally who have generally maintained a low profile through sheer fear of humanity.

OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

Yesterday’s News Today

On this day in 1959 Raymond Chandler died. Chandler was the greatest author America has ever produced and if you haven't read one of his books you owe it to yourself to rectify this. Personally as a first read I recommend The High Window (don't just cheat and watch the Bogart movie version of The Big Sleep because the Hays Code insisted that the ending was changed from the book and that it be toned down, also Bogart is really poorly cast as Marlow).

And now the news:

  • If you do want to see a film version of Marlow this is a good one (even though it was set in what was then the modern day it actually works really well) :
