We are almost back to normal again. Basically, when Graham re-installed windows on the main CFZ computer yesterday, it was OK, but as soon as we started to put other programmes on it, it started to mess up. At tea time we decided that it was past saving, and so we transferred all the remaining data onto the back-up computer which until now we had used for video and sound editing only. It does mean that we have no back-up computer, and will not have until after the Weird Weekend when we shall buy another one.
Because of all our data back ups, practically nothing was lost except one of my address books which waslost because we saved the wrong one :(
We should be back to normal by the end of the day.
Sir, I must object. You are unjustly maligning this little chappie here: http://www.freebsd.org/layout/images/beastie.png who is well known as the mascot of pretty much the most stable OS on the planet; he isn't unfriendly so much as a wee bit selective about who his friends are.
ReplyDeleteHis more cosmopolitan relative can be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/ and once again, this tends to rather put the Blight of Redmond to shame. I habitually leave a server running this OS running without reboots; the record so far is 8 months straight.
Viruses are now little more than a fading memory with these operating systems. The firewall on such machines is most effective as well, and as installed they are safe as they stand.
Finally, might I recommend that you download and burn an image of Knoppix? This is purely a CD or DVD bootable image, designed for getting back into broken Windows systems (not that I have any of these personally, but I do sometimes encounter them).
Alternatively, get a Mac. Certainly look at getting an Apple Time Machine for backup purposes.
