On this day in 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were seen alive for the last time during their accent of Everest. Mallory's body was found, almost perfectly preserved, in 1999 with a photograph that he had said he would place on the summit missing so it is entirely possible that he was the first man to reach the summit.
