Richard Freeman as been in touch with me about the sighting I had the other day. He suggested that my description of what I saw sounded very similar to a jaguarundi. I am not familiar with theses animals so on googling this I found that this animal was indeed very similar to what I saw. However, I did not see its face so I asked Brenda to look at the googled images. She has since told me that this animal's face and shape were very close to what she saw six months ago in the same spot where I had my sighting. I do know one thing: this animal was not a mustelid, a pine martin or another creature of similar size; it was just too big and cat-like. I am not an expert on animals but this creature was like nothing I have ever seen in this area before.
I have no wish to report this sighting to the local or national media; if there is an out of place animal in this area then I hope people will leave it alone to get on with its life.

Around Illinois and Indiana, we get jagarundi sightings along with the puma ones. Some of the witnesses are quite certain what they saw were specifically jagarundis, and we have been getting those descriptions since the 1970s at least. Once the host of a radio talk show where I was being interviewed mentione that HE had seen one.
ReplyDeleteI hear that jagarundis are supposed to be expanding their range in the South and in Florida, be we always thought we were getting reports of stray exotic pets up here.
