On this day in 1796 Edward Jenner administered the first ever vaccine. Jenner noticed that milkmaids that had caught cow-pox never caught the more serious and life threatening small-pox so took a risk in publicly infecting his gardener's 8-year-old son with cow-pox, then after that infecting him with small-pox. The vaccination proved successful and after a concerted vaccination campaign small-pox has been almost eradicated outside of laboratory specimens.
