AUBREY: Eagle gets goat

Hi Jon, I am glad to have read that the Weird Weekend went off almost as planned. You work extremely hard and I for one would like to thank you for your website, which I visit religiously every day. And for On the Track, which I love; I guess I am addicted. Jon, I found a strange video on the internet of what looks like a golden eagle hunting a rather large goat; you have to see it. When I was young I used to hear stories of eagles carrying off young children, but the experts said that an eagle would not be strong enough to carry off a child; you judge.

  1. That is an amusing and reasonably well edited clip, but in my opinion is totally unbelievable. A large eagle may just about be able to have a very small / new born lamb or kid as a 'take-away' snack, but not a fairly well grown goat.
May I suggest that readers/viewers now check out this unedited / unpaintshopped ?? much clearer version of what is obviously the same piece of video, that is also shown on You Tube.

Check out Biofort, where there reports of bald eagles or Washington's eagles abducting and even killing children.

  3. The eagle does not carry the goat while in level flight: this is staged footage from Féliz Rodríguez de la Fuente's 1974 series 'Hombre y la Tierra'. The eagle was trained to grab goats and to then pull them off the ledge, and at times it was able to glide downwards while still carrying the goat. The last part of the footage - where the eagle glides horizontally - is faked. This was all discussed on Tetrapod Zoology back in April 2008.
