I came across this somewhat strange story in a booklet I bought today at
Oxfam,Macclesfield titled Legendary History and Folklore of Stonehenge
by L.V.Grinsell (1975) which gave a reference to its origin in Notes and
Queries 8th series,11,page 324 (1897) which I reproduce here:
