Please can anyone identify this `Japan Wild Cat` from a photo I took on April
2nd in the Manchester City Archives from one of the five volumes of The
Pocket Naturalist,1800. (Sorry about the quality.)
It was also known as
the Indian Wild Cat. Dale Drinnon suggested to me on Facebook that it might
be the Iriomote wild cat.The text accompanying the drawing said it was the
size of a domestic cat, face, lower neck
whiteish,breast,lower belly,clear
grey, body, part yellow and clear grey, tail 10 1/2 inches long, with a cry
like " a great cat." Pennant compared it to
the "Chat Sauvage Indien."
