On this day in 1822 Charles Babbage proposed his difference engine to the Royal Astronomical Society. The difference engine would have, had it been built from Babbage's plans, been the first working automatic calculator in the world (with the possible exception of the Antikythera mechanism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism )
