OLL LEWIS: Yesterday's News Today

Yesterday’s News Today

On this day in 2011, according to the predictions of Harold Camping, a Christian radio DJ, the world was due to end. Camping claimed that the faithful would be taken up to heaven in the rapture at this point. Either there were not a great deal of people left deemed worthy of being raptured or he was insane or lying (my money's on the latter) because if it did happen nobody noticed. Still at least his followers didn't do a mass suicide like Heavens Gate did when told a similar tale (which insistently, is why you shouldn't mess about with being in a cult, kids). When the May date passed without incident Camping said that there had been some sort of judgement on the date, but the actual date of the rapture and the destruction of the entire universe (sucks to be aliens I guess) would be in October 2011. Camping had a stroke in June 2011 and stopped most work and interviews and October also passed without incident. After this rather than making any more predictions about the date of the end of the world he said he had been sinful to even try to predict it. He died in December 2013, the Universe having outlasted him by at least 6 months and counting.
