The text here is a transcript of a conversation between
several people including myself on Facebook a few days ago on the subject of
giant grasshoppers in Hong Kong , after I
noticed a photo on the Lamma Forum of a very large grasshopper there. It seems
that there are grasshoppers in Hong Kong at least as big as the world`s largest
grasshoppers which are about 12 cm long.

Richard Muirhead Thanks Sunny,so would the locusts you saw be very unusual/strange for Hong Kong? The reason I asked my question is because of a photo I saw online yesterday of a 10 cm long grasshopper on Lamma Island.- Sunny Chi Ho Chan I catched grasshoppers to feed ducklings and chicks when I was a kid. Ed Liu Unfortunately Orthropterans r not so well documented in HK, but I saw many >10cm long grasshoppers just this summer on a urban hillside. I guess they r not all that rare.
Mercury Wong The most common "large" locust species in Hong Kong would be Chondracris rosea, female individuals of this species can grow up to 80mm in length.

Peter Parker The biggest grass hopper I've ever seen, measured about 10cm. Is it the "real locust" that eat up the crops?
