Columbia, Missouri -- It could take up to six months before conservation agents figure out what a Missouri hunter shot when the thought he was bagging an unusually large coyote.

The man -- who asked officials not to disclose his identity -- was hunting for deer Tuesday at Franklin Island Conservation Area when the animal came into range.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports coyotes are in season and the man had a permit, so he shot what he thought was a state-record coyote.

But when it weighed 81 pounds -- seven pounds more than the national record -- a Cooper County conservation agent ordered it taken to a regional office for testing.

Experts say the animal could be a wolf, a large coyote or a hybrid animal with characteristics of both.

  1. My friend shot a coyote/coydog
    in Equinunk,Pennsylvania in 1984
it weighed 70lbs, it looked more wolf like than coyote, the incisor's were very long, and it was black across it'e back, and brown sides.
we didn't really have coyotes in the area at that time, now they are over populated, and doing a number on the deer herd.

  2. If your not killing for food or to protect your life or someone else's. Don't Kill it.I wish people would stop being so gun ho. This picture is obviously a coyote/ wolf cross. they are what balances out our wildlife. It sickens me to see people killing these animals. yet we over populate the world with more cattle than we have wildlife. deer populate much faster than the wolf. as wolves breed once a year and have tow to three pups. the killing rate on these is much more than cattle or people.please stop killing them.if you took time to raise even one pup you'd never kill another as they are very smart and has far more intelligence as most people.
