On this day in 1976 Viking 1 took the “face” photograph of the terrain of Mars, so called because it looked like a face. More recent photos of the area have shown that the face is actually a normal hill but by chance was made to look like a face because Viking took it's photo from the right angle and at the right time of day for the shadows to create an optical illusion.
