Steve Jones writes: "I have attached a scan of the article on the latest ABC sighting from Wakefield . It's locally known as "The beast of Ossett". I was informed back in 2000 that some of that year's sightings were actually a cut-out being used by a group of hoaxers."

Looking back at the original story filed in the Wakefield Express in 2000, and in the story carried by the Sun, the original photo of the Beast of Ossett was certified as genuine by Dr Andrew Kitchener from the Royal Museum, Edinburgh, and by an engineering researcher from Tokyo University who said: "We estimate it to be about 7-8ft long, 3ft high and to weigh about 280lbs. There appears to be no evidence of photographic tampering. Based on our finding, we would conclude that this represents the first conclusive proof of an unknown big cat at large in the British countryside."
