Colin Higgins, one of my favourite bloggers, has written:
"For the past few weeks I've been getting occasional messages when I open a web page [on the bloggo]:
"Internet explorer cannot open this website - connection aborted".
This now happens with every page making the site unusable. Not IT literate enough to diagnose the problem myself but thought it might be worth reporting it case it's something your end."
Has anyone else got this problem, or indeed, does anyone else know what could be causing this? It only happens on our pages, and not on other blogs in the bloggo network like Karl or Corinna.
Suggestions please.
The error message you are seeing only occurs in pages which contain an internal sub-link leading to an externally sourced video clip or similar (for example, a video from You-Tube). If you click Back, you will get the page itself, but without the video clip (because it could not open it). Resolving the issue completely would require more information, but I suspect it has to do with how newer versions of Internet Explorer handle the embedded link.

So, other people who have read this, leave a comment. Indicate whether or not you see this error message, and if so what Operating System and version of Internet Explorer you have. The comments will then help some more qualified I.T. person than myself, who is actually on site, determine the specific issue and fix it. (I hope).
In addition to my earlier comment, at around the same time that error message began to occur, I began to also have trouble clicking directly out of this site to go to external web pages (for example by selecting something else from Favourites). The page would simply hang, and if I attempted to close it, would read, "This page is busy, and attempting to close it now may cause problems." Both this, and the nature of the error message, also support the theory that the issue is something to do with how external links are accessed by a recent version or update of Internet Explorer from locations internal to the site.

ReplyDeleteI would suggest ditching Windows altogether in favour of a Linux flavour called Ubuntu. Not only is this as easy as Windows to use, almost completely virus-resistant and completely free, the current release version "Jaunty Jackalope" is named after a cryptid.
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, what more can you ask of an operating system?
Firefox is included as standard in Ubuntu, and other browsers like Opera can easily be added in subsequently. The hardware support in Ubuntu is good, and pretty any monitor, PC base unit, keyboard and mouse etc is supported out of the box.
That happens to me on CFZ too sometimes. Most annoying.

It's irrelevant whether FireFox comes pre-installed as you can download it for FREE, and I suggest everybody uses it instead of IE - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
ReplyDeleteIf you're thinking of ditching Windows (I can't really see the point if you are used to it though), then I would suggest a Mac. You can then run Mac OS, Windows and Linux - all 3 at the same time :-)
