For a variety of technical reasons that I shall not ennumerate, I have been managing Karl Shuker's blog over the last few weeks. If anyone can tell me why people (including Karl and Dale Drinnon) seem to find it impossible to log-in to Google, please let me know, and I will give a free year's membership to the CFZ to anyone who can tell me hopw to fix it, but that is another story.
However, one of my jobs is to authorise comments where appropriate, and ever since we set the blog up there have beencomments every few days from someone called `anonymous`. The comment always reads `cars go fast`. I assumed that it was some automatic bot thingy, so I have been deleting the comments whenever they arrive. Yesterday, however, it read `carsgofastcars go fast` and today:

This does seem to be unlikely to be the work of an automated blog, and - as Richard points out - can be sung to the tune of Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik. This puts the only serious contender for being the culprit (Nick Redfern) out of the running, because not only have they never heard of Mozart in Pelsall, but he would have done it to the tune of The Ramones singing Blitzkreig Bop.

Sounds like the word of some bored child who has obviously found they can leave a comment and have nothing better to do. Apart from reporting it to the blog providers I'm really at a loss to suggest what to do.
ReplyDeleteAs for the login problem either contact the providers, or in my case it may simply hate you and you have to do a totally new login, which I did and it has worked well ever since.

Where login to google is concerned, I would hypothesize that there are cached logins in the browser that are interfering with the real login; that or a cookie is set somewhere that is similarly interfering.
ReplyDeleteMy own approach to debugging this would be a typical sysadmin's belt and braces approach to start off with a browser that we know is free of these logins.
Now, I use Linux on my computer here, and Firefox plays perfectly nicely with google logins, so if you were to burn a Knoppix Linux live CD onto a CDROM or DVD-ROM and boot the PC off that. (hit F12 just after the PC starts; that lets you tell it to boot off the CD drive)
Knoppix has the great advantage that it is a live CD only environment; it is impossible to accidentally install Linux onto your computer with such a CD. All it does is gives you a copy of Linux running off the CD, which includes a copy of Firefox web browser which will not have any cookies or stored passwords in it.
If, using this you cannot log into google then the problem lies in the username/password; if you can then the problem lies closer to home in the PC's web browser system. In this latter case I'd suggest you run a fully updated antivirus program on the PC immediately, then run an anti-spyware program such as Spybot on the PC after this, to clear out any possible software nasties.
After doing this (it ain't a bad idea to do so regularly anyway on Windows) then clear out cookies that pertain to google from whatever web browser you're using and try again.
If all this fails then back up the PC fully (I assume you do this regularly anyway; if you don't then do this immediately before you do anything else!) and re-install the operating system from scratch; consider also making the unit into a dual-boot Windows/Linux PC to give yourself more choice of OS later.
