THE GIANT MUTANT OCTOPUS IN PUGET SOUND

It is always nice when I discover a new illustrator. Let me introduce you to Denise Dahn who is really quite spectacularly good...

Sometimes I let my imagination run wild. Maybe I watched too many sci-fi thrillers when I was young, or maybe I just want to sprinkle a little artistic license on the ordinary world, but sometimes…I daydream up weird stuff. Just for the fun of it.

Once, I casually remarked to my husband as we walked on the beach, “Just imagine—right now—a giant mutant octopus emerging up out of Puget Sound! Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Make Your Nature Count

Join in our summer wildlife survey

Hello Jonathan

Our summer wildlife survey is nearly here and we'd love you to take part!

To get the best possible overview of how summer wildlife is faring around the UK, we need lots of eyes watching gardens over the coming week.

Please help us create a 'snapshot' of bird numbers in your region. Simply count the birds you see in your garden (or local park) for an hour between 2-10 June, and tell us what you see. We’d also like you to give us information on the other wildlife that visits your garden. You don’t have to see these species in the hour you spend counting birds, but let us know if you ever see them in your garden and if so, roughly how often.

How to take part

You can find out all you need to know about doing Make Your Nature Count on our website.

Give us your results!

Whether you've been inundated with birds or only seen a few, it's all useful information, so please send us your results – it's easier than ever to tell us what you've seen. Simply click the link below to submit your results. The results form opens 2 June.

Just in case the link doesn't work, visit our website and use the following details:

This was one of the ones I had trouble with: the photos and text would disappear and I had to add them over again.

I'M THE GONZO BLOG DOO-DAH MAN

Its friday, and a long Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend approaches.

Thirty four years and eleven months ago I was desperately trying to impress the North Devon punk girls by telling them that I had been on the Sex Pistols Jubilee boat trip up the Thames, when in fact I had spent the weekend with my parents at an exclusive hotel on Dartmoor.

Ten years ago at the Golden Jubilee I was suffering with food poisoning at my friend Joyce's house in Huddersfield, after spending four days trying to catch a giant catfish. This weekend will be spent listening to Martin Stephenson, interviewing various luminaries, and reading Johnny Rogan's biography of The Smiths.

But I am waffling. Its what I do. So back to the matter at hand. What have we got on the blog for you today? It's a particularly fine selection if I do say it myself.

First up we have a long piece in which Erik Norlander and I discuss favourite science fiction stories, and he reveals just how many of his compositions have been based on them:http://gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.com/2012/05/erik-norlanders-amazing-universe.html

Then we have a smashing slice of Auburn, live on wobble cam. That girl really is bloody fantastic:

I am very proud of the work I did on the recent Rick Wakeman biography by Dan Wooding. Now, much to my gratification, the reviews are beginning to come in:

And whilst on the subject of Rick Wakeman, guess who has a new live album out:

We have a slice of video, from Jefferson Starship, live on stage last week:

And finally, I make one of my periodic digressions away from the Gonzo catalogue, and reveal that Current 93, have done a cover of a song by Comus. Who? and Who? I hear you ask. Shame on you - both (in my mind at least) are national treasures:

Tomorrow I shall be back, bright and relatively early...
