ANY IDEA WHAT CAUSED THIS?
This picture was taken by our old friend Gerald Smith, once the Vicar of the South Pole (Chaplain to the British Antarctic Territories). He wanted an identification (it is Bufo bufo the common European toad)

Really difficult to be certain from a single dorsal photo...most likely culprit is a minor bacterial infection from an injury.
A fly infection - there is a species of fly, whose larvae actually attacks the eyes of toads - and in the end east them away.
