And so, let’s do Mondays blog. Here we are at the beginning of another week, Mother is still in hospital, Corinna is still poorly, Carl is sitting on the sofa in the sitting room studying for his Open University degree, and Graham is still in America.
As many of you will know, one of my greatest interests in Forteana are the weird links and coincidences that turn up again and again to those of us whose life pursuits take us into esoteric places. I thought that I had become immune to such things , but apparently not. This morning’s weird coincidence truly takes the biscuit. What would you say if I told you that there is a link between the histpory of British counterculture, anarchopunk band Crass, and the extirpated mammals of Hong Kong? A brace of subjects which anyone who knows me will be aware hold a deep fascination for me.
John Saeki is an acquaintance of mine who is currently researching the history of Tigers in Hong Kong, something which I have researched with Richard Muirhead over the years. This morning you sent me something that he had written on the subject, which you can read here:
It includes the following passage:
"A tiger cub was captured in the New Territories in 1928 and for a time lived at the house of Mr H. Green, the superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department. Somehow the unlucky feline ended up as a mascot on the British warship HMS Cumberland for a short time before dying on board."
If one reads Patrick Boniface's history of HMS Cumberland, it turns out that the Captain at the time was Arthur Lionel Snagge, CB (4 May 1878 - 1955) who was ... wait for it...
THE BROTHER OF JOHN SNAGGE WHO WAS GUARDIAN TO PHIL RUSSELL aka WALLY HOPE.
It truly doesn't get much weirder than that.

And by the way chaps and chappesses, a trip to the Jon Downes megastore may seem to be in order:

Meanwhile I continue to pretend that I am a popstar, because now I have sold eight whole copies of my new album Coldharbour. If I continue at this rate I will get a silver disc sometime at the beginning of the next millenium. Coldharbour, by the way, can be found here: https://jondownes1.bandcamp.com/releases

I think it is really rather good, but then again I would say that wouldn't I?
AND THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE GONZO MAGAZINE:
Richard says goodbye to the legendary Steve Hunter, Mad Iccy meets Kris Needs, Doug goes to see Oingo Boingo and The Tubes, Bart photographs Jon Anderson, John goes to San Francisco and he may or may not have had flowers in his hair, Alan has an addendum to OZORA, Jon listens to the newly refurbished Abbey Road, and mourns Steve Marriott, David goes to the Braddock Free Store, and Tony visits Downton Abbey.

SPECIAL NOTICE: If you, too, want to unleash the power of your inner rock journalist, and want to join a rapidly growing band of likewise minded weirdos please email me at jon@eclipse.co.uk The more the merrier really.
* The Gonzo Daily is a two way process. If you have any news or want to write for us, please contact me at jon@eclipse.co.uk. If you are an artist and want to showcase your work, or even just say hello please write to me at gonzo@cfz.org.uk. Please copy, paste and spread the word about this magazine as widely as possible. We need people to read us in order to grow, and as soon as it is viable we shall be invading more traditional magaziney areas. Join in the fun, spread the word, and maybe if we all chant loud enough we CAN stop it raining. See you tomorrow...
* The Gonzo Daily is - as the name implies - a daily online magazine (mostly) about artists connected to the Gonzo Multimedia group of companies. But it also has other stuff as and when the editor feels like it. The same team also do a weekly newsletter called - imaginatively - The Gonzo Weekly. Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.co.uk
* We should probably mention here, that some of our posts are links to things we have found on the internet that we think are of interest. We are not responsible for spelling or factual errors in other people's websites. Honest guv!
* Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 60 who - together with a Jack Russell called Archie, an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, three other cats, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention Archie and the Cats?
