TODAY'S BIG CAT NEWS

The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper-column inches than any other cryptozoological subject.

There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we are publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in.

The worldwide mystery cat phenomenon (or group of phenomena, if we are to be more accurate) is not JUST about cryptozoology. At its most basic level it is about the relationship between our species and various species of larger cat. That is why sometimes you will read stories here that appear to have nothing to do with cryptozoology but have everything to do with human/big cat interaction. As committed Forteans, we believe that until we understand the nature of these interactions, we have no hope of understanding the truth that we are seeking.

  • FORTEAN BIRD NEWS FROM THE WATCHER OF THE SKIES

    What has Corinna's column of Fortean bird news got to do with cryptozoology?

    Well, everything, actually!

     In an article for the first edition of Cryptozoology Bernard Heuvelmans wrote that cryptozoology is the study of 'unexpected animals' and following on from that perfectly reasonable assertion, it seems to us that whereas the study of out-of-place birds may not have the glamour of the hunt for bigfoot or lake monsters, it is still a perfectly valid area for the Fortean zoologist to be interested in.

    The May Queen: Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892)

    YOU must wake and call me early, call me early, mother dear;
    To-morrow ’ll be the happiest time of all the glad new-year,—
    Of all the glad new-year, mother, the maddest, merriest day;
    For I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    There ’s many a black, black eye, they say, but none so bright as mine;        5
    There ’s Margaret and Mary, there ’s Kate and Caroline;
    But none so fair as little Alice in all the land, they say:
    So I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    I sleep so sound all night, mother, that I shall never wake,
    If you do not call me loud when the day begins to break;        10
    But I must gather knots of flowers and buds, and garlands gay;
    For I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    As I came up the valley, whom think ye should I see
    But Robin leaning on the bridge beneath the hazel-tree?
    He thought of that sharp look, mother, I gave him yesterday,—        15
    But I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    He thought I was a ghost, mother, for I was all in white;
    And I ran by him without speaking, like a flash of light.
    They call me cruel-hearted, but I care not what they say,
    For I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.        20

    They say he ’s dying all for love,—but that can never be;
    They say his heart is breaking, mother,—what is that to me?
    There ’s many a bolder lad ’ll woo me any summer day;
    And I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    Little Effie shall go with me to-morrow to the green,        25
    And you ’ll be there, too, mother, to see me made the Queen;
    For the shepherd lads on every side ’ll come from far away;
    And I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    The honeysuckle round the porch has woven its wavy bowers,
    And by the meadow-trenches blow the faint sweet cuckoo-flowers;        30
    And the wild marsh-marigold shines like fire in swamps and hollows gray;
    And I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    The night-winds come and go, mother, upon the meadow-grass,
    And the happy stars above them seem to brighten as they pass;
    There will not be a drop of rain the whole of the livelong day;        35
    And I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

    All the valley, mother, ’ll be fresh and green and still,
    And the cowslip and the crowfoot are over all the hill,
    And the rivulet in the flowery dale ’ll merrily glance and play,
    For I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.        40

    So you must wake and call me early, call me early, mother dear;
    To-morrow ’ll be the happiest time of all the glad new-year;
    To-morrow ’ll be of all the year the maddest, merriest day,
    For I ’m to be Queen o’ the May, mother, I ’m to be Queen o’ the May.

Find out about it at this link: www.gonzo-multimedia.blogspot.co.uk

    * Jon Downes, the Editor of all these ventures (and several others) is an old hippy of 57 who - together with a Jack Russell called Archie, an infantile orange cat named after a song by Frank Zappa, and two half grown kittens, one totally coincidentally named after one of the Manson Family, purely because she squeaks, puts it all together from a converted potato shed in a tumbledown cottage deep in rural Devon which he shares with various fish. He is ably assisted by his lovely wife Corinna, his bulldog/boxer Prudence, his elderly mother-in-law, and a motley collection of social malcontents. Plus.. did we mention Archie and the Cats?
